Does York have a shot at the Groza?

I don’t know much about other kickers in the country, but Cade York was as good as I’ve seen at LSU and I can’t imagine there’s many better kickers in CFB. Consistent, huge leg, and made the clutch (and one legendary) kicks. I don’t think LSU has ever had a Groza winner.

If he doesn't win it this year then he will win it next year assuming the wheel don't just fall off.
Its happened before with other awards where the winner doesn't get it the year they should.
also could go to Fuller since she executed a perfect squib kick and barely cleared the bar on two xps

Can you win the Groza and Heisman in the same year?

Sarah Fuller has the Groza locked up.

I think so, plus she has her jersey in the hall of fame already.
Cade will need to keep hitting school records in fog to get in there

The Groza often times are a year behind for whatever reason.
He should get strong consideration this year, but if not this year, if he even semi repeats this years performance he wins in 2021.
Specs at UGA last year did not have near as good a year last year as he did in 2018 and he won.
He lost the game at SCAR and missed a few against us. Still won.

I thought I heard hes 15 of 18 in the last game. If true, I think Ice Cole had a higher consistency %. But York is money from over 50 and thats what can't be matched. Thats why York will have the long NFL career i wish Ice Cole got.

He's a Groza semi-finalist (1 of 20)
Nationally, he is tied for 3rd in total FG's made (18). The leader, Kessman of Pitt, has 23. However, Kessman attempted 8 more FGs than York. The #2 guy, Johnson of Virginia Tech, attempted 6 more FGs. So that means York has a better make % (86%)
Kessman was 9 of 14 in FGs over 40.
Johnson was 11 of 16
York was 9 of 11
York was 6 of 7 from 50+
Kessman 4 of 5
Johnson 3 of 7
In the SEC both Alabama and Auburn's kicker had a higher % of makes. However, both attempted less FGs than York. And COMBINED they attempted 3 FGs over 50 yards.
And just from a pure subjective point of view it is hard to say any of the other potential finalist had a more clutch kick than York. A school record 57 yards...on the road...with 27 seconds left...through a thick fog...to upset the #6 team in the country. And the make wasn't a fluke. It didn't graze the upright or crossbar and bounce in. It was drilled right down the middle with at least 5 yards to spare.
To say he had a tremendous year would be an understatement. In fact, you could start to make the argument NOW that he is the best PK in LSU history.

it also happened to Delpit with the Thorpe award. He should have been the winner in 18 and got in 19 despite a slight down year and injuries.

It was a record-breaking night for LSU bomber Cade York who kicked a 57-yard field goal with 23 seconds left to give the Tigers a 37-34 upset victory over Florida in a fog-shrouded game that saw six lead changes at “The Swamp” in Gainesville, Fla. on Saturday night. The sophomore from McKinney, Texas has five field goals of 50+ yards this season, the most in the nation, and now owns the longest kick in LSU history. He is 9-for-11 from that range in his two-year career. On the season, York is 14-for-17 on field goals and 31-for-31 on extra points. His 13-point game brought his season total to a team-leading 73.

Absolutely no disrespect to York but if that's not an indication of how this season went, our excitement is around the Groza, vs last years list.

Honestly, he should be one of the top choices. To make a school record 57-yarder on the road in deep fog to give your team the lead and eventual W in a season where they desperately needed a signature win was huge. That kick changed the feeling of the season of one with zero decent accomplishments to one with a big W and a little hope.
And then he nailed 4 FGs against Ole Miss including a 50-yarder, so his points ended up making a difference in the win which secured a non-losing season for LSU. He nailed 50+ yarders in his last 3 games and has made 10 of his last 11 attempts starting with his 49-yarder early against Arky (which also ended up being a 3-point win). LSU's season could have been much more bleak without him.

He attempted just about the same amount of FG's this season as last. If LSU would have have played 15 games this year (and the averages held) he would have attempted about 4-5 more FGs overall than last season.
Yes, while his work this season really stands out because no single player on the offense had a truly great season. That doesn't mean LSU fans shouldn't be excited to see a guy get recognized for a truly great season. It would be a great season this year or LAST season.

I hope he wins and he should, but Cole got RIPPED OFF IN 2018, lost to a guy at Syracuse (indoor home stadium, turf!) who made zero high pressure kicks as his team stunk...politics..

well, she does deserve it, but if it doesn't go to her there will be an uproar over the injustice

yall would have known this kid was legit if yall say his all star game.
the dude made a 59 yarder in the all stay game and it would have been good from 65 yards out. Both teams went crazy when he booted that ball through. He's impressive.

That 57 yard kick vs Florida and all the kicks he made vs Ole Miss should have sealed it.

I agree with some of the other posters that this is an award that is usually a year behind (see Delpit winning Thorpe last year based on 2018 season).
However, if there is one thing that can disrupt that notion is having an award defining moment, kind of like when you hear players having Heismen moments. Sometimes the numbers aren't enough, you have to have something to help you stand out. The Florida game was York's "Groza" moment if you will and will be the reason if he does end up winning it this year.
ETA: Conversely, I think ZVR had a real shot at the Ray Guy award; but I think his performance in the Bama game ends up costing him. But that first punt from the game this past Saturday should definitely be on his highlight reel if he is a finalist.
