Does Wade run them too hard in practice the day before a game?

All year I've heard comments about how multiple times LSU has looked surprisingly flat in games that they should have been fired up to play. I've also heard guys that report on the team make remarks about how intense WW's practices are even the day before a game. Some have even reported that his shoot arounds and warm ups are pretty high energy.

Is there any chance WW's intensity level, although a good thing 95% of the time, might be contributing to some dead legs on a team that's banged up?

I'm a Wade supporter and I'll probably break the record for downvotes for asking the question but was just wondering if anyone else felt the same way.

I can't answer that without seeing it myself. It's certainly possible. That said, I've run in SLC and that shite catches up to you fast. I don't think that's the problem, though. We came out flat and lethargic. I just think we're an inexperienced team without great talent. At this time of the year, you need either talent or experience.

This team isnt talented. They are a bunch of 20 yr olds. I think intensity is the right way to go.

Earlier in the season it was mentioned that Wade called them in for practice the morning of a night game because he wasn’t happy with the effort given the day prior.

I’m all about that. Changing a culture starts with the smallest details. Wade has done that.

I know. That’s what Virginia said.

I think Wade is trying to create a culture of toughness and he's (to some degree) kind of used this season as a bit of a "throwaway" to do that. He's ok with losing games (this season), if it means the program is tougher going forward.

Jones had ZERO accountability in his program. Poor effort was never a huge concern and last year's team quit on him. Wade is trying to change that and if it means wearing out his guys this season, so be it.

Hopefully now he has a baseline for the program culture and the new guys coming in will adapt rather than having to be taught.

I think some of the lethargic mentality and “laziness” is a carryover from the last regime. That’s the way JJ coached and from time to time you can see it in the players that came from him.

The altitude didn't help anything. We need to offseason in Lima, Peru.

I have no idea about practice affecting games. If we do the same thing for both home and away games then, no, it’s not a factor. But wade has 7 scholarship guys returning who have no clue how to COMPETE in, much less win a road game.

He better hope he can fix that with the four incoming freshmen and bigby-Williams or it won’t be the type of year we’re expecting.

I would think that a coach who is conscientious and highly detailed about his players’ nutrition, to the amount of hours they sleep, and the room temperature in which they sleep, would likely also be conscientious and aware of if he is overworking and wearing out his players the day before a game.

The reality is that just because a practice is intense or hard, doesn’t necessarily equate to wearing out the players. The old saying, “practice doesn’t make perfect; perfect practice does,” is not a cliche, it’s the truth. If you just practice just to practice and run through things, then that mentality translates to game play as well and you will become very careless. But if you practice like you are in a game, then the transition becomes more seamless.

Legit question from the OP, and I appreciate the way you posed the question, without accusing CWW of it explicitly.

That being said, I agree with most of the posts responding to the OP question, in that I think he is determined to change the culture of this program from one that was OK with less than 100% effort to one that gives 100%. He has earned my support and I hope the team members believe the same.

He must only run them too hard before road games. Seems fine at home .

He's a young coach with an inexperienced team. He'll figure it out.

It’s called conditioning. They are 19 years old. Pretty sure they can run some sprints a few days before their game and be fine. They are almost professional athletes.

Yeah if it was me or you out there we might feel it. I promise they get their hard running in during off season and during season it’s maintained. What do you think track runners do????

They sucked under JJ. Total decline.

Wade is changing culture. It takes being a hard arse at first. Being a young guy, it safe to say he proved his salt to them. He is teaching them what he expects. In turn, players should realize and prepare better on their own for hard practices. This work ethic should be engrained in the players for this upcoming offseason and so on.

Maybe he does like my retarded high school basketball coach did and makes them max on bench press and/or squat the day of a game?

There is a certain level of toughness and grittiness that is needed to come out every night and play Tenacious. Unfortunately a majority of the players on this team are holdovers from Jones era and have two things working against them. One being that they collectively don't have that mentality and Jones had instilled a laxidasical culture. You can see that Wade began to change that. But until he gets some of the type of players he wants it was inevitable. I think you'll see a different starting next season

We need some guys that will wrestle a bear for a loose ball and attacked the glass like their last meal depends on it

No. They are at their peak of athleticism

NBA players play travel and practice more and are fine.

We just aren’t multidimensional or talented enough to go on the road and compete with a team that shoots well. We can’t slow it down and bang em around
