I saw a snipit on him for the Olympics where they showed his backyard pole vault area he trained with in quarantine.

I’m familiar with his brother who played at LSU but am curious why he’s representing Sweden instead of the United Stares. If he is one of the best in the world wouldn’t he be on the US team, the country he was born raised and lives in. I see his mother is from there but she’s an American citizen now.

If I’m Missing something fill me in.

Mondo has dual citizenship w USA and Sweden. He chose to represent Sweden for several reasons. One being that the USOC sucks and has way too much bullshite red tape involved.

Maybe to me this comes across as disrespect to that United States. Just my opinion but if he was my son I’d want him representing HIS country not Sweden. Best of luck to him regardless.

Dual citizenship. He chooses to represent Sweden because it is easier to qualify for the olympics than in the US. It doesn’t matter what you are ranked in the US you still have to compete in the Olympic trials and finish in the top whatever to go to the Olympics. So one bad weekend at the trials and you are sitting at home. Kind of dumb but it is the rules.

Is this still true with him being a medal favorite? I could understand that as a teen. Is he not ever able to say I want to compete for the US if he wants to in say 3 years in Paris

He likely got a much sweeter deal earlier on from Sweden to pole vault with them over USA. Plus they care about track quite a bit more over there in Europe than here. Here it's basically a "oh the olympics are on lets watch track". Over there it's a big deal a lot of times throughout a year, so he gets more attention in that aspect.

Over here basically he'd be "oh that guy who won pole vault", over in Sweden he's a national hero.

I would have more of a problem with it if he just left the US for some reason to train in Sweden and chose to represent them. If he couldn’t make the US team, for example, and chose a random country to squeeze into the games.

But he’s legitimately half-Swedish. If he wants to show his mom’s country a little love, that’s okay. As I understand it, he may represent the US in the future.

The goal is a gold medal
The stupid USA Olympic Trials make it very difficult to qualify and if you mess up you've wasted 4 years of training
Never know what the weather conditions will be at Olympic Trials

In Sweden he was pretty much eligible right away and with the mom's Swedish ties it was a no brainer for him rather than risk not qualifying for US team

Yes even if you are best pole vaulter (or at any track and field event) in the world you still have to go to the Olympic trials and qualify for the team.

Yeah makes zero sense. Why would you want to be in the Swedish housing unit?

If he has dual citizenship as some have said, then Sweden is HIS country too.

Maybe you're a fricking idiot.

I mean, you can't be that smart if you're so open about being a mississippi state fan.
