respectfully, bullshite. athletic scholarships are nothing more than a line Entry on the university's balance sheet. In reality, they are actually cost nothing.

Divison 1 Mens Soccer only has 9.9 scholorships per NCAA rules....so there is no way they could give out 14.

Also, most programs carry 25-30 players, so it takes much more players than 14 to "field" a team.

How can you argue either way for something when you don't know the facts?

A schoarship costs nothing? Some of y'all must have attended the Obama school of economics.

Whine all you want. Soccer is a loser and it isn't going to happen. Y'all are a laughable lot.

I'm pretty sure that the out of state fee is waived for athletes. And no that is not the same budgetwise for the athletic department.

The team would have probably up to 10 scholarships distributed between these 14 players.
Tuition and Fees ~9,000
Room and Meal Plan ~10,000

So there is roughly $200,000.

Travel
Charter bus rental is ~4,000 a trip. Say 6 trips a season add in hotels, that rounds to is no more than $35,000

Coach salary combined would probably be ~150,000 at the most.
$50,000 head coach. Say 3 assistants at $30,000

With field upkeep lets suppose this comes out to an even $400,000.

$400,000 is .4% of LSU's annual athletic budget. Like I said earlier, pocket change for the athletic department.

Pocket change as in negligible when looking at what LSU spends on everything else.

LSU's Athletic Department is already one of the most profitable in the country, and this is even more of an achievement when you consider that the AD gets not subsidies, unlike the majority of schools.

LSU could easily afford to add both women's equestrian and men's soccer teams.

Sure. Let's also add a hackeysack team, a frisby team, a skateboard team, and a pogo stick team.
For no other reason than we can afford it. No problem.

Why are you so mad about the growth of soccer?

If hackeysack air skateboarding were the most popular sport in the world and anywhere from 3rd to 5th most popular sports in the country then yes, we should if we could afford it.
Buut... They are not, Soccer is.

LSU currently supports 8 men's and 11 women's teams. There is easily room for a couple more sports at LSU.

As has already been posted, there are already club teams in both equestrian and men's soccer. It would be a no-brainer to add those two sports. It wouldn't even be necessary to build facilities immediately.

I'd love to see both sports added to the list of varsity sports supported by LSU.

think about this, and this is the same effect as we had in college baseball... LSU success will make Tulane, ULL, etc. want to have programs

It would cost the university very little actually. Certainly not $37,000/person annually. Not to mention the academic scholarships many of them would qualify for. Do you understand what the word cost means?

quote:

How many players do you expect to need to field a Soccer team. Say 14 maybe.

NCAA limits soccer scholarships to 9.9. Most players would receive partial scholarships. Out of state tuition is waved for most students too who have any academic or athletic achievements.

Not to mention there would be TAF supporters willing to donate money for a soccer team. Also, with the amount of kids playing soccer, the camps would generate revenue too

Did you go to the Fox News school of fallacies?

quote:

If you soccer fans want a soccer team so bad why don't y'all figure out some way to pay for it? Hey, go have a bake sale or sell Jambalaya dinners
in front of WalMart but leave the average LSU sports fan and his wallet out of your plans.

So why don't we eliminate all sports that lose money?

Here is the information for what TAF spent on Athletic scholarships 3 years ago. Yes, I understand that there is a COST for Athletic scholarships and I don't live in some fairy tale land where everything is free.

Read this and then go argue with TAF and tell them that they didn't really spend 8.3 million in Athletic Scholarships in 2011. Incidently, in 2011 TAF spent an average of 18,444.45 for each of LSU's student athletes scholarships. That is a combination od both in-state and OOS costs. Like I said that was 3 years ago. Now go tell someone else that a scholarship costs nothing. That's just bullshite.

Still is peanuts for a $100+ million athletic budget that is also one of the most profitable in the nation.

And this year, LSU will make even more profit by adding 66 suites (1,518 tickets total) and 3,000+ club seating out of the 8,000+ seats overall that the SEZ addition will add to Tiger Stadium.

No where does it say that they spent $8.3 million on Athletic Scholarships in 2011.

I never said that it costs nothing. Way to ignore the rest of the holes that I brought up in the post. You're completely ignoring simple principles like FC to the university. Adding 1 more student to LSU does not cost LSU $20,000/year

It certainly does say that LSU spent 8.3 million in 2011 on athletic scholarships. It's on the 1st page.

Too many here confuse revenue with profit. Yes, we are one of the top revenue producing schools. But we spend just about all that revenue every year.

We could add soccer and other non-revenue sports. But let's not be naive to think it won't divert money from another sport or raise football ticket prices to pay for it.

No, it doesn't say LSU spent $8.3 million, but you aren't going to get that point no matter how many times I explain it.

Also, TAF is private...
