He was making in the $1,000,000’s or 2,000,000’s at ND until he basically went to LSU. Assuming he was spending a reasonable amount of money, which I’m sure he was, he wasn’t accumulating anywhere near generational wealth until literally right now.

Y’all are fricking INSANE if you think he’s walking away from $50,000,000+ to retire when he doesn’t have anything close to that in his bank account based on what he was making at ND

You are INSANE if you think the head coach of Notre Dame is only making $1 or $2 million.

Be careful what you wish for. Perhaps these aren't coach issues and we end up with a worse staff, to boot.

Given our NIL or lack therof, this is barely a top 20 job.

You think only old coaches hate this NIL BS? They are going to cap it before long don’t worry.

Exactly. We may be looked at soon as an Arkansas or Ole Miss level program with a better in state talent pool. Still not enough.

I think this is the problem. It’s too much for Brian Kelly. This landscape puts him out of his element. It’s too hard for him to adapt and change at his age.

Yes, Saban likes it when he is in control. Couldn't do that in the NFL and can't do it in the NIL era.

Saban is no fool. He made the right call.

LSU basically quadrupled his ND salary

Notre Dame doesn't have to report the majority of his earnings. They report what the school pays him due to him having been one of the highest paid employees at the school. However, just like at LSU, the school doesn't pay the majority of our coaches' salaries. If you really believe Kelly only made 2 million/year at Notre Dame you're very naïve. That number was in all likelihood in the $8 million/year range. If they only paid 2 million/year, it would be one of the most unattractive jobs in college football

If he just wanted to coast, he could've leveraged LSU's offer into a bigger contract at Notre Dame and continued on there.

tbf it was said by Tom Loy and other ND insiders he tried this and Swarbrick said no.

I do think he would just retire though. He was publicly talking about retiring and handing the program off to freeman before he left. I think he deeply cares about what people think of him and if he really can't hack it/lsu doesnt have the money to compete I think there is definitely a scenario where he calls it quits and blames it on NIL.
