He’s the #3 starter but how he’s used moving forward will depend on the situation. Other than the mental drop off when CJJ left him in, today really couldn’t have gone much better for us and for Hurd.

And I don’t think I’ve seen a 98 FB from Hurd this year and he threw a bunch at 97.

I think we will all be very disappointed if LSU doesn't have at least one more weekend series left

Yea but a super regional isn't going to be treated like a typical weekend series. Hurd will come out of the pen to close out a game if we're winning and Coleman will be our backup game 3 option if we use Hurd and still lose

After his last two outings, he is a starter.

Not really, though clearly
Jay will have no fear starting him if the situation presents himself. Obviously how Hurd is used will depend on how things unfold. If we draw a four seed with a legit No. 1, he likely will start Hurd. If not it will probably be Coleman or Money. If that’s the case and we are in a tight, late game situation you better believe he will put in Hurd to close out the game. In the Super, the same will apply. If needed in a Game 1 or 2, he will use Hurd to close out games if that situation occurs. And if a Game 3 is needed and if Hurd hasn’t been used too much, he would start that game.

That sounds great in theory, but I'm not sure you can risk pitching someone else and putting it into the bullpen's hands if Hurd is throwing this well

But if you start Hurd, then you are risking closing out games with a bullpen that doesn’t have Hurd in it because he started. Since we have zero complete games so far this year (except for run rule games), you are going to need a decent number of innings from your pen. I would prefer for a lot of those to come against the No. 4 seed rather than the 2 or 3 seed.

I’m aware. Didn’t say there was. Have some common sense and realize “the Sunday guy” is the 3rd starter in your rotation. That’s who gets game 1 of the regional

Consistent in that he can only go 3 innings, albeit solid, and then turns it over to a bullpen

Which makes Coleman the perfect set-up guy out of the bullpen if you have to pull a starter early. IMO, the only way Coleman should start is if you know you have a pitching by committee game and you need someone to come get the first 3 innings, before you get a different bullpen guy to get the next 3.

Starter! Many thought some of his earlier problems were at least partially mental. Maybe he "cleared the mechanism today".

Like that Jay left him in a few more batters when it looked like he was close to done today. That's gotta help his state of mind.

He could pitch out the bullpen at some point. Sure. So could Skenes or Floyd going forward. They are starters tho

As soon as I think I need him, I'm pitching him. If the opportunity doesn't present itself, he's my #3 starter. Same goes for Coleman.

I don’t understand the question. 3 game weekend series are over.

Super Regional, obviously.

Sounds like he is throwing game one of the regionals

I suggested this on a thread last week and got lambasted for it. I was reminded of that today when I listened to the excellent Skip Bertman interview linked on the Dandy Don website and Skip recommended the same thing.

Do you even Super Regional man? It's set up exactly like a normal 3 day weekend. Hell, even in the regional you are going to throw your 3 weekend starters. So it's a valid question. It's just that we will start our Sunday starter in game #1 vs the weaker opponent.

Dude…

SR isn’t a normal weekend, there isn’t a guaranteed 3rd game. The question was who is our Sunday starter going forward as if we have more regular series remaining. The regional likely changes the pitching order, saving Skenes for game two. And the SR, if you can win in two, you go as hard as you can.

Btw, I wasn’t trying to be a dick with my initial response, but in my eyes there isn’t a “Sunday starter” in that sense any longer.

True. But we know both those guys are starting regional weekend and Super Regional weekend (if we get there). Hurd may not start either weekend; not because he’s not the clear third best starter on the team, but because he may be needed more out of the bullpen before he can start.
