Do you consider JaVonte Smart's career a disappointment?

Assuming he really is done playing for LSU. Everyone had high expectations for him, particularly this season, considering how highly touted he was in HS. While expectations for him individually may have been a little too high for him his 2nd year, he never missed an NCAA Tourney (LSU wouldve clearly made it this season). I dont think any class other than the 2018 recruiting class can say that, at least going back a good ways. I do really hope he comes back though because we saw with Skylar this year how guys can improve over time and I think JaVonte has a higher ceiling than Skylar and could be better than Skylar was this year as a junior or senior.

If he sticks with the draft I don't see him getting drafted but ya never know how things turn out. I think only one tiger will get drafted maybe.

Yes, a sophomore who has declared for the draft. Meaning, as of now, his LSU career is over with and it is fair game to look at his career as whole.

Not at all having seen him play in HS numerous times, he is exactly what I thought he was. Just a tweener, not a great shooter or facilitator. Not explosive but quick enough to get to rim against most guards. I have no doubt he will return and I don't see him ever being an NBA regular. Just an really good Collège guard.

If he did, in fact, receive a strong arse offer then yes. If he was paid nothing then no.

He’s being forced to play out of position as a necessity. He doesn’t thrive as a facilitator. He’s a pure rhythm scorer a la Jamal Crawford, although his pro career arc won’t come close to that.

No way. He was a big part of a sweet 16 and the starting PG on a tournament team if there was one. Frustrating? Perhaps. Extremely inconsistent? For sure. But not a disappointment

He's not a true PG, he's way better as a 2 guard, it shows since Waters left

Smart was a lot better this season than people give him credit for. I know he made some boneheaded plays at time but he played good for not being a true 1 asked to play the position. He would be great if he could just stick to the 2. He ended up being number 6 in assist per game in the SEC and of the top 10 he was first in minutes per game and 3rd in assist to turnover ratio.

He has all the skills to be a great player. I think his problem is that he needs to decide what he is, a shooting guard or a point guard. Many games he plays with confusion, where he comes down the court and you can tell no matter what he is going to shoot, no matter if he has a good shot or he has open team mates. Other times he is determined to distribute the ball and hangs around the top of the key passing the ball around, not trying to penetrate.

This is all part of making better decisions. Skylar Mays was as guilty of these things as anyone early in his career, but got better every year. Smart just has to learn to take what the defense gives and pick his spots on inflicting his will, where now he does the opposite.

You are one of the dumbest posters on the rant. College players always declare for the draft. It gives them a chance to get a grade and find out what nba scouts think they should work on. Smart will be back

He will be back, but at this point I don’t know how you don’t consider it a disappointment. Though I will say I felt like he was coming on before the season abruptly ended.

He's 2 years into his career, let's take a step back for a minute. He's been a 2 year starter and very solid player his first 2 years.

I almost remember people being "disappointed" in Skylar Mays too after just 2 years. I know he didnt come with the same recruiting ranking Smart did, but these posts seem eerily similar to people harping on Mays after 2 seasons.

Smart showed notable improvement from freshman to sophomore year, I'd wait before calling him a disappointment.

He's had a good two years thus far. Perhaps the issue is not his play, but your own subjective expectations. It's not like in year one he sat behind a couple of slouches (Mays and Waters - both experienced players). Yet, he still averaged 11/3/2 and was probably LSU's best "sixth man". This season after a rough first few games...which everyone unfairly held against him for the entire season...he turned into one of the better PG's on the BEST offense in the SEC. LSU didn't miss a beat offensively when EVERYONE thought they would because of the loss of Waters. Smart was a part of that.

He wasn't seen as a one-and-done guy when he signed with LSU (Wade confirmed that in the wiretap). And you can argue he's played unselfishly for the greater benefit of his team. He's probably the best player on the team at getting tough baskets when there is not much there. In fact, you might say he's been a little too unselfish at time. Particularly when you saw what he could do as a scorer vs a top 5 Tennessee team as a freshman. That was a great Tenn. team and they were helpless to stop him down the stretch. Without that performance, LSU likely doesn't win the SEC outright.
