CBK said in his press conference this morning he's going to play WILL...

Which is what teams started to do when he was playing as an edge, hence he needed to be stood up somewhere else. Realistically, he needs to put on 20 pounds, move to safety, or be a situational player at the next level.

Perkins has one incredible asset going for him...speed! But I took up slightly for House's use of him last season. OC and OL coaches figured Perkins out. Perkins is not strong enough or big enough to fight through blockers so pass rushing from the LOS wasn't going to work. For that reason also, he isn't the best tackler on the team...hence 6 missed tackles in the Ole Miss game. And since the secondary was incredibly inexperienced (Brooks' brain tumor diagnosis a devastating blow), MH decided to use him to help out in pass coverage and almost played a short safety type position.

Your statement has pretty much been mine and some others. A few posters resent the term "tweener" but that is exactly what Perkins is. Not strong/big enough to play on the LOS and even be a run stopper at the 2nd level and yet really not experienced enough to play as a safety. Someone once said he would be a top 5 pick in next year's draft. Unless he can find a position, he would be a 2nd or 3rd day pick. IMO, Kelly is doing the smart thing trying to find a position for him for his future. There might be some growing pains for now, but if anyone thinks "oh, just use him like he was used a TR FR when he wrecked havoc". Yeah, good luck with that. OC and OL coaches aren't stupid and they make adjustments and find weaknesses in players and defenses. Maybe the Arkansas coaches in the 2022 LSU game were too busy eating Cheetos and drinking Pepsi with John Chavis to have adjusted during that game.

From Football Advantage site...sound like Perkins position to me.

"The Will has a freelance-type role in the defense.

The job of the other two linebackers -- the Mike and the Sam -- is to clog up blockers and shield the Will from offensive players. If they do this properly, the Will will have more freedom to roam from one sideline to the next. This is necessary, as most defensive systems will ask their Will to be the playmaking linebacker. A great Will can break up passes, deliver big hits, and disrupt the offense. Considered the ball-hawk among the linebackers, the Will is typically the best pass rusher among this group. They may even be the best pass rusher on the team. In man-to-man coverage, he'll typically match up against second or third receivers or running backs. In zone coverage, he'll drop back into the mid-range zone. Against the run, the Will's job is to identify the ball carrier early and attack him on the most direct path possible, without letting the ball carrier get behind or outside. The Will should be free to roam around the field and not be locked into certain responsibilities or zones.

The main trait that a Will needs to be successful is athleticism. He needs to be powerful, of course, but most Will linebacker's will be faster than they are strong. With that, it's not straight speed that they need the most; it's the ability to be quick and disruptive by avoiding blocks more so than taking them on. He'll line up on the weak side of the field and have the freedom to roam around the field and make big plays. Those who become Will linebackers need to be fast, quick, and very athletic."

I don’t think most OCs would be satisfied with that. That is also assuming our safeties are covering receivers. And that Perkins isn’t quick enough to blow by the TE.

You’re not. Relax.

This is spring practice and nothing is set in stone. Let them experiment. I’m sure a lot was learned last year on what TO do and NOT to do.

I think they’ll continue to move him around and experiment with him.

the fact that so many in this thread are upset about HP going to the mike is legitimately hilarious.

BK says GumboPot needs to get realigned

quote:

"The defensive structure is different. You start there," Kelly said. "You have a new voice with Blake Baker coaching the linebackers; that's different. Collectively, Harold, myself, and Blake felt like this was a place that was going to maximize this potential. "We certainly could keep him at the star/SAM linebacker position, but I think he can impact the defense in so many ways at the WILL linebacker position. We have the ability to get into different looks with him and utilize his ability to be a multidimensional player." "He knows the clock is ticking; there is a sense of urgency. I think you see a committed player and new voice in Blake Baker. And i believe it’s his best opportunity to make that next step.

going inside doesn't necessarily mean he's the Mike.

Will allows him to work and move around more

Because if I’m an OC going up against Harold in the middle I’m going old school. That is, put a TE in the halfback position or motion him into halfback position, double team the DL at the point of attack, allow the TE to take out Harold, and allow my big RB to stumble for 4-5 yards or make the safety miss and break it for a nice run.

If that’s effective that’s more of an indictment on the defensive line than it is linebacker.

Big thing is I hope they take advantage of his ability as a spy. Still makes me sick that we blew our last chance at a win over Saban by letting a cold passer continuously scramble for easy yards while the most athletic spy in CFB either zone drops or edge rushes.

Additionally JD5 made Baker’s defense look like trash, but I’m hoping that’s because the latter didn’t have players like Perkins.
