I have it on DVR and I'm looking at the play-by-play on ESPN's website. Nothing really fits your description.
The closest thing was running a draw to Ridley on 3rd & 15 from West Virginia's 46 in the second quarter and it didn't follow a penalty. It was a yard short of the first down but resulted in a field goal.

I do not have it on tape and do not have a photographic memory. I remember being upset at the call. I believe we were driving from the NOrth to the south. But I won't argue you, you have the tape. Thanks for searching.

Better yet how about running the ball on second down for a change so we don't get in third and long when JJ skips a pass to the receivers.
If you are the coach and your qb sucks and can't get going and on first down you run for 15 yards and on the next first down you run for 5 and 1/2 yards why do you throw the ball on second????? Pisses me off.

For me, what is even worse, is how often we pass on 1st down.
I know you have to keep teams off balanced and whatever, but I read a stat that Jefferson was something like 2 of 8 passing for 3 yards against WVU on 1st down. With Ridley running well, at some point you gotta say screw it, and take the 3-4 yards you can get on 1st down.

so that means that les only believes in throwing on 3rd and 3-5
Completely disagree.
I agree that it's not the ideal situation to pass, but it's the most likely to get the 1st down. It's interesting to note that we only had 2 run playcalls on 3rd down before the 4th quarter, which was the 3rd and Goal from the 1 in the 1st quarter and a 3rd and 14 in the 2nd quarter.
The problem is we don't put ourselves in 3rd and short very often. Only 3 of 15 situations were 5 yds or less. Anyone will tell you that those are not high probability conversion situations for ANY team.
Take a look at the following playcalls against WVU:
1st down: 8 pass, 16 rush
2nd down: 7 pass, 15 rush
3rd down: 12 pass, 3 rush
3rd down distance (pass playcall):
12, 22, 11, 10, 15, 6, 7, 7, 9 (Goal), 10, 4, 9
3rd down distance (run playcall):
1 (Goal), 14, 1

3rd and long would not be a good time to throw the ball
The majority of NFL and college teams would throw in this situation, unless it's something like 3rd and long on your own 3 yard line, or 3rd and 38, or something like that.

Third and long is not a good time to throw the ball. That does not mean that Les does not do it as the stats posted above show. You are throwing when the defense is expecting you to which you would rather not have to do. That does not mean that you don't. You will pick up the 1st more often on third and long with a pass than a run. He is pointing more to the lack of success in the passing game as us having so many third and longs that we have to convert. We need more production on 1st and 2nd so that we have fewer third and longs.

Not enough information.
Where are we on the field, on the clock, on the scoreboard, etc.

I disagree 100% if it's in regard to any team besides LSU.
As far as we go with our current qb situation and play, hell yes I agree 100%.

Correct. A quick kick would be better.

That's is why our offense sucks, we are never in a 3 &2 situation, always 3 & long.

Great time to run a draw..
Or option to the short side of field...

we had a 3rd and long (13?) in the second quarter....Ridley had like a 12 yard run, one yard short...we kicked a FG

no.
its a generalization which cannot be evaluated without knowing game time conditions, including the pass rush, coverage, and the QB.
it might be the perfect time to loft one into the end zone.

I don't think it matters whether we run or pass on third and long. Either way we don't pick up the first down. How often do we pick up a third and 7+? It has to be something like less than 10%! Might as well run then punt.

3rd and long would not be a good time to throw the ball if you have this guy in Tecmo Super Bowl:

3rd down and 8?
Run the option.

LSU doesn't get first downs. We had 2 the whole first half of the WV game.

After reading this thread I have come to the conclusion that there is no good down to have JJ pass, regardless of the yards needed.

quote:A good time to throw the ball is when: 1)your running game is established, 2)your passing game is established, and 3)when your play-calling is not obvious to everybody. That can include 3rd and long. Just tune in sometime, you see teams do it successfully all the time.
a good time to throw the ball?
