Do coaches really go vanilla on play calling during big opening games?

Coworker of mine today said he expects LSU to come out very vanilla against Miami that way we don’t show our hand to all our SEC opponents.

With the way our program has been trending, why in the hell would coach O hold back? We need this win vs Miami so badly. You’d think he’d be dialing up the annexation of Puerto Rico if he had to.

Miami is a top 25 opponent. Your coworker is a moron.

And no, we don’t hold everything back. Sure we may have a few things in the arsenal that we don’t show, but it’s maybe 2-3 plays. Not an entire game

Agreed, he’s not the brightest in the office. Still, I get the logic if we were playing Southeastern opening weekend, but not Miami.

Your coworker is an idiot. There are some plays that are held back or not mastered until later in the season, but it’s more to do with situational football, and not having mastered the plays as opposed to trying to hold stuff back.

We will run the plays the coaching staff is confident we can execute

No more and no less

They are a quality opponent. We won't be saving anything.

It’s a common misconception that you can “save” plays for later. Most successful teams don’t run a ton of different plays. It’s the same plays out of a million different looks. You’d be amazed how few plays Ohio state, Auburn, Oregon under chip, etc actually run. Now I may save a certain formation or motion for a team I have later, but the plays don’t change that much.

With that attitude Southeastern will be this year's Troy.

No

They come out "vanilla" because it's the first game. Teams don't hit stride til mid season or so on offense

O and Ensminger surely aren't stupid enough to pussyfoot around like that against a highly ranked opponent are they!??

Vanilla play calling will be because we don't want to turn the ball over...not because we don't want to show our hand.

Turnovers lose games. Don't be surprised if the game plan is to ease into executing this offense.

I’m not confident in that statement until it’s proven. What is proven is he has been known to “pussyfoot around”.

See. LSU vs Troy 2017

Not a popular subject, but prove me wrong.

This was a fallacy started during the Miles era. Even if LSU played North Texas the offense was so unbelievable sometimes that people would say LSU was holding back to not give Bama and others anything to study.

Problem is LSU was still running the same exact plays at the end of the season as they were against North Texas.

It was successful more times than not though so why not? Why would you hold back just in the first game of the season?

WellSir, I certainly can't disagree. I reckon I'm cautiously optimistic that ole buzzard Ensminger gonna have Burrow throwing the football and mixing in the run. Ensminger made big promises, filled me with a hair bit of hope. Then Burrow arrived and filled me with even more hope.

Coaches not showing much in early season non conference games only predates Miles’ LSU tenure by a few decades.

And Edwin has filled us all up with hot air at times. let’s hope Ensminger has complete control of his offense and his play calling works well with our talent.
We’ll find out in the first few games.

I know one thing, neither one of them has room to be vanilla. He better beat the brakes off teams he’s suppose to, and compete against the tougher teams or else.
