Dime Package on 3rd Downs in the FSU game [3 images]

Result: 8 yard pass completed to TE for 1st Down.
• TE is completely uncovered and gets the easy 1st Down.
• 3 Corners and 3 Safeties
• Baskerville is the only LB (besides the Jack)
• I would assume that either #24 Bernard-Converse or (more likely) #5 Ward missed the assignment on the TE. It would seem like the Safety would take the 3rd receiver, since JBC covered the Flat.
Result: QB hurried and hit, throws ball away
• #8 Ojulari shows how the Jack may be used as a standing LB, stunting around the far side of the line.
• #8 Ojulari injured (returned) one play after Maason Smith's injury.
• #3 Brooks was lined up over the TE and blitzed, instead of playing Center Field.
• #24 JBC covered the slot again, this time on a slant.
Result:13 yard pass completed to TE for 1st Down
• Same routes as the first 3rd Down
• TE is covered by FS (15 yards off ball) and gets the easy 1st Down.
• #15 Sage Ryan is playing the Nickel Corner, instead of JBC.

Seems like Gaye jamming him would have helped

Without having more info, the simple explanation is the N and FS are in two deep and either the LB or SS is out of position. Formation is strong right and we appear to be playing it as balanced, although we may be doing this to disguise coverage pre-snap. If I remember the play correctly, FS (Ward) was closest defender to TE when reception was made which likely meant the N had single deep coverage and Ward was responsible for underneath middle. Again, probably need more info to determine who as at fault.

Not to highjack, but one of the things that we would do in the past in this situation is have the right CB (Stingley most recently) on an island in straight man coverage. That freed up the SS to be in underneath pass/run support. I didn't notice us doing much on Sunday, nor did I expect it with a new DC and new corners. I do expect we will need to do it more often against west coast type teams that spread the field like State, Ole Miss, and Tenn.

The 3 questionable hires in this game all reared their ugly head from BK. Kerry Cooks, Denbrock, and Polian. All 3 were bad. Safeties missed assignments all game but they did also make plays just had a lot of blown assignments.

Jay Ward is the only player on the defense from the last 3 seasons of the same miscommunications and he was near the result of the play on all of these. He also ranked terrible by PFF in the FSU game. He is the common denominator.

Ward also is still doing the same shite of trying to be Ronnie Lott instead of wrapping up and making the tackle. That shite pisses me off so much when he comes in trying to make a big hit and just bounces off and the guy gets an extra 7 yards. Just tackle 5. All we need.

The team was ill-prepared.

The area of the field where we had the most trouble happens to be the area of the field Joe Foucha specializes in locking down. We'll be fine

I would think the N back would come down and ward would go with the fly pattern.

You got some proof of that

Example three looks like a scheme failure. The LB vacates and leaves a smaller safety to the TE.

Baskerville didn’t play in the game. It has been discussed by media groups on why he didn’t play.

In this case, the nickel over the dime!

I'm almost positive I saw him on the field. What is the reason that the media is saying?

If you’re calling BK a questionable hire, then you can’t be taken seriously.

They do not know the reason, possibly stemming from off the field things he needed to work out

To an extent, I agree. But this specific problem is not akin to being unprepared in FG/XP protection. These are new players, many at a new school, learning a new defense, in their first live action against an opponent.
This is the kind of shite that non-myopic people assume is a given and realize that 4-5 losses is likely in this situation. Where Kelly, Denbrock, and in this case House will earn their keep is how fast they can have the scheme ingrained in the players heads which will inevitably lead to a better product on the field.
