Digging into some of our rushing numbers

Direction of our runs:
Wide Left- 39.9%
Inside Left- 12.3%
Inside Right- 9.8%
Wide Right- 37.9%
Yards per carry:
Wide Left- 6.09
Inside Left- 4.88
Inside Right- 3.38
Wide Right- 2.55
Explosive runs:
Wide Left- 11
Inside Left- 7
Inside Right- 1
Wide Right- 4
It’s very, very clear what the takeaway is- run behind Will Campbell. DJ Chester is a liability. I think we also saw the importance of Garrett Dellinger last week. We can run the ball left, the numbers show it, in fact we run the ball pretty well. The simple inside zones need to be limited and attack the edge, primarily on the left side. Be a left handed running team.

Also going to say it, Emery Jones has hurt his draft stock this year. He needs to come back and play guard.

CBK said they are not moblie enough for a good run game.

So basically Frazier and Jones have been complete arse

Hard to tell without watching the film. I place a lot of blame on Chester. There was a play last week where if he cuts his guy off it’s a huge gain for Durham. But he doesn’t so it’s tracked as a minimal gain and a knock on Frazier.
There was that other play that went right where TreyDez Green was supposed to cut off the DE and he couldnt(duh) and it was a negative play to the right side.

I didn't hear Kelly say that. I heard him talk about the importance of mobile OLmen for a good screen game though.

Where did you get the %s?
If they’re you’re own then I don’t trust or believe the numbers/percents

Now do just the power 5 games. Throw out Nicholls and S Al to get a clearer picture.

I've said this to my coworkers, the outside run is where it's at, especially with the type of backs Durham and Jackson are. They seem to thrive more running outside. Those numbers also show who the best linemen are and that's Campbell and Dellinger.

We run off tackle delays / read option out of the shotgun way too much. Plain and simple, you are not helping yourselves with the playcalling like that.
Sloan simply sucks as a playcaller. It’s not some secret. He can’t call runs or mix up the playcalling well. He’s predictable and does the players no favors.
In the end, our OL is struggling but playcalling is making it 10 times worse.

Interior OL play is what has killed the running game too. They simply suck at it and Chester is horrible at identifying and directing who to block before the snap.
Your guards, especially Frazier, suck at run blocking and have little strength to get push off the line. It is affecting Emory if you watch the film as he is being put in a horrid position trying to make up for Frazier’s mistakes.

Bringing facts to the rant. Odd.

We can't pull and run counters because our pullers will most likely trip over our center falling backwards into our backfield.

Moscona today said Dellinger was our highest overall rated OL, I think. I’m assuming he was using PFF numbers.
I don’t necessarily agree with this, because I never thought he was a sure-fire 1st rounder that typically comes out after just 3 years. Sure, he was mocked there a lot before the season, but that’s way before scouts really start to do serious evaluations. I think he would have been exposed during the draft process after the season. Not that he wouldn’t—or won’t—get drafted high, but I don’t think he’s currently a 1st rounder.
He may benefit from coming back, but he ain’t coming back to play guard. Even if that is where he winds up in the NFL. He may have to be promised the LT job to get him to come back to show his versatility or, if Davis is ready to take over at LT, come back and play RT again and get stronger and put together a better season of run-blocking on film and be the leader of the OL. I think he’d be worth a decent size bag.
But what the frick are we gonna do the rest of this season? Even if Dellinger is back for Bama (and I have my doubts), something has to change. Not positions, necessarily, but something. If Delly is out, and Davis can handle RT (may need to help with Taylor or Borderlon lining up next to him more than they normally would Jones), maybe you move Jones to LG and just go hard behind Campbell and Jones. Get some consistent good runs behind them to the left side, then that opens up play-action to that side with Nuss rolling out/turning around to his throwing side, where he’s stronger. We’ll see.
The biggest thing may be getting Durham more healthy. I don’t think he’s even the 80-85% Kelly indicated. But I’m also not sure he can get much better with just an extra week. That injury may require several weeks off to fully heal (if not surgery). I think there were a couple plays the last 2 weeks a healthy Durham turns 12 into 40 or 50. Or -1 into 4.
Coaches on both sides of the ball have their work cut out for them not only watching Bama film, but self-scouting and finding our own tendencies and where we might be exposed and how to best cover them up. Will be interesting to see how it all plays out for sure.

Where did you get these numbers? I have felt like we don't run between Campbell and Dellinger often enough.
Posted on 10/31/24 at 11:14 am to des4271
He needs to pull some lineman or motion TE to get a lead blocker without a fullback. This is the way.
Posted on 10/31/24 at 11:19 am to DBG
No way inside is that good for just SEC games.
Posted on 10/31/24 at 11:25 am to DBG
I agree, stop running the inside zone read with a non running quarterback, against elite SEC defensive ends its a walk in the park for them when they can ignore the pull from the QB.

Do you mean inside zone. The most popular running play in college and pro football.

Go watch the All 22 of the A&M game. We holes to run through and guys running open and we didn't execute. Nuss had a bad game. It's really hard to call plays when you can't run the ball. I was 100% against promoting Sloan and am not a big fan of his but I don't think the A&M game nor the struggles we've had this year is play calling related.
