In 2008 before he ended up failing of course.

I loved it. He made the Sweet 16 at Nevada. He made the Sweet 16 at Stanford. He started off great with one of LSU’s best post Dale Brown era teams in 2009.

Trent Johnson was the first black head coach in any sport in LSU history. Was there a pushback from the racist fans of a team in the deep South? No. People liked him because he won games at his previous stops.

The pushback to Mel Tucker is his .500 head coaching record.

Loved the Trent hire, hated the Johnny Jones hire.

They both sucked.

I hate the practice of hiring coaches based on arbitrary things such as skin color or what state they were in when they popped out of their mommas. Hiring a candidate based on skin color is as stupid as people defending O because “he’s a Louisiana guy.” Go get the best candidate even if that guy is a green skinned alien with 4 legs from Mars. Just go get the best guy.

His 2008-2009 LSU team (13-3 in the SEC) got hosed with seeding and having to play #1 seed North Carolina in the 2nd round of the tourney. LSU gave Carolina its toughest game of the tourney.

I didn't love it, but I also didn't hate it. I was willing to give him a shot and he had decent credentials. I hated the Jones hire.

Trent's main issue was more he didn't want to accept the reality of the what college basketball recruiting is

It looked great on paper

Jones was an early season episode of “Joe gets cucked”

That team could have made the Final Four with a better draw.

Neither Johnson nor Jones were hired based on skin color, though. Your premelt is showing.

That was some BS right there. It seems we always get screwed over in these tournament games.

Absolutely not. Did up a thread when he was hired and you’ll find me complaining. He turned a perennial top 10 Stanford program into garbage. He had 1 good season at Stanford when he had the Lopez twins.

He’s actually very similar to Mel Tucker. He was a bad head coach who had 1 good season so everybody though he was great.

And if Anthony Randolph wasn’t a one and done in 2008. All 2009 was missing was post play and they still would have made the final four if they weren’t hosed with their seed. That’s how good the guard play was on that team.

Never, ever, ever let players give suggestions on the next head coach.

And I did like the Trent Johnson hire. Thought he would do well. Then realized after about 3 years that he had far too much integrity to be a good college basketball coach. He wouldn't get down in the mud and get involved in the dirty world of college basketball recruiting. But X's and O's, and running the program, he was a good coach.

He got Nevada into the Sweet 16 as well. He also had one good year at LSU - mainly due to Marcus Thornton. That team played UNC, the eventual national champion, better than anyone.

I thought it was odd how elated Stanford fans were for Trent to leave. From what I know about tony Bennett wanting the job it’s a textbook blunder on alleva’s part, but to be fair Trent was solid on paper

I would be okay with Mel if the right guys turned down the job. He shouldn’t be a top 5 candidate right now though

Mel Tucker hasn’t finished a season over .500 yet at three different stops.
