There are many factors that went into his success. The two biggest imo was 1. He was a great coach that got a bunch of players on campus that had no business playing college ball and 2. He was basically competing against 10 schools on a yearly basis and the majority of the country treated baseball like a glorified intramural sport.

roid era, bats, etc.

obviously he was a great coach but he also had way more inbuilt advantages you'll never see in college baseball again

Wrong. Mainieri became head coach 5 seasons after Skip retired from coaching.

And after 13 seasons at LSU why can't you spell the head baseball coaches name correctly??

Skip lost SOME midweek games, of course. But not as many, on average, as Mainieri's teams do.

LSU's midweek pitching under Bertman was usually pretty suspect, and from time to time, cost LSU a game. But you could count on his offenses, far more often than not, to show up against the OTHER team's midweek pitching, which was worse than ours. Imagine that?

That's what frustrates me about current day LSU baseball. Guys just seem to take midweek games off, mentally. They don't lose slug-fests. The bats almost seem to surrender before the game starts.

It made me mad for a few years, but I've slowly become apathetic about midweek games. If they're not into it, it's hard for me to be.

Comparing Skip to pulmonary is like comparing Bill Bellicheck to Les Miles.

Jesus some of y’all yards still can’t comprehend that without Skip, there would be no baseball program as it is today. Mainieri inherited the program that Skip built and yes he did inherit Smokes players. He hasn’t won a NC since

Show some fricking respect for the man that made LSU baseball what it is today.

If you had lived through the Jim Smith and Jack Lamabe eras you would know better

Please point out the part of my post that was fricking disrespectful to Skip. Thanks.

Sounded to me like you were saying Skip did not matter at that point, which he did

Like I said, I lived through the John Smith and Jack Lamabe years. It was terrible

And it sounded to me you didn’t know Smoke Laval followed Skip for 5 seasons before Mainieri was hired. It still sounds like you didn’t remember that.

But Skip was losing an occasional mid-week game, not 4-5 per year. And his insertion of certain players into the lineups of mid-week games was very strategic so that they would have some pressure tests going into SEC play.

That being said, parity is indeed a real part of college baseball. And there are many players that are "nearly" good enough to play for LSU that end up at other state schools and develop into great players.

But there is no excuse for only scoring 2 runs against Nicholls.

They literally argue that what CPM has done is harder and more impressive than what Skip did lol.

In Skip’s last season he lost 4 midweek games including losses to ULM, Southern and twice to Tulane.

The season before in 2000, the year LSU won its last CWS under Skip, he lost TWICE to McNeese in midweek games and got swept by unranked Houston in a three-game weekend series.

In 1999 Skip lost 6 midweek games to USL, Northwestern, ULM (TWICE) and Tulane (TWICE).

It’s funny how our brain erases bad memories.

I know there is a lot of Johnny come lately LSU baseball fans but you are talking to one that has been around LSU baseball a long time. Have seen the good and the bad. So I have earned my dues to bitch about what and who I want. Get over it

Oeaux lost to Troy. Should fire that guy too!!

Mainieri loses about 5 or 6 games a year that would be on par with losing to Troy. This is baseball so there really is no comparison!

That said, I've been ready for PM to retire since the Stoney Brook debacle. I think he would have been relieved of his duties by now, but for the reprieve he got with a "showing" in the 2017 CWS finals.
