Did Pete Maravich cause a lot of turnovers?

Due to his wild style, it seems there would have been a lot of turnovers. I have only seen highlights and even in those there are times where his teammates are caught off guard by his passes. It looks like there was potential for plenty of turnovers, but of course you don't see that on highlight videos.

Not trying to trash the guy because he is regarded as one of the best to play the game.

I know he had 18 turnovers against UCLA when we played against their vaunted press in 1970. Didn't see the game so can't say how many of them were on wild around the back pass attempts or what.

I heard there were some passes during his playing career where he bounced some passes off the face of teammates not ready for them.

I believe the rule of thumb was if he wasn't looking at you then you were probably getting the ball.

He probably had quite a few turnovers since he handled the ball every possession. Don't think turnovers were kept as an official stat back in those days. He did average 5 assists per game at LSU.

Maravich was a showman and was stuck on bad teams. He was a Globetrotter in the NBA. His style was loose and free so yes he turned it over plenty which is part of the deal when u play that style. Asst/TOV is the typical Point guard measure but Maravich really didnt play any position except scorer. Amazing ability; changed the game; played at a level well beyond his era; Could play right now in the NBA.

I watched every game at LSU when he played and do not remember him having that many turnovers. I remember him being triple teamed and dribbling through all of them lots of times.

His passing was amazing but his teammates knew when to expect them.

His passes wernt expected by some of his teammates. He was like a magician. Id say that sometimes he amazed his own teammates. So , no he didn't cause a lot of turnovers, its just that he was so far ahead of anyone else that sometimes turnovers resulted in his teammates just not believing what he was doing. He was the best ball mechanic of all time.

Divide TOV/MP for a more accurate picture.

Wow that guy was a beast. I wish I could have watched him play.

When he was a freshman, the freshman team would play to a packed barn, and when the game was over and the varsity team came to play for the game that counted, 60 to 70% of the fans had already gone home. The freshman team put up quite a show. They went undefeated at 17-0 until they lost the very last game to Tennessee.

One of my favorite memories of seeing him play was seeing Apple Sanders standing under the basket looking up expecting Pete to shoot and getting slapped in the face with a pass that should've been an assist...It'd leave a big red mark; happened at least once a game it seemed.

he was a scoring machine from anywhere on the court. he made moves with the ball that will likely never be seen again.
