I'm sorry, but excellence in the world of CFB and CFB coaching is only determined by wins. It's the harsh but honest truth.
Then you should love Les.

One time. A few days before the 2004 Sugar Bowl (BCSCG) I went on the Creole Queen, or some riverboat, with the team. It was fans and the team. Kids running around getting autographs, brass band playing, just a really fun setting...as long a you aren't Nick Saban.
I ended up next to Saban at one point and asked if he'd get in a picture with me and my friend. He agreed, but his attitude and body language was a huge middle finger (you know, because he had so much else to do while stranded on a boat on the river with fans). I handed my camera to my mom to take the picture. She didn't know if it was on or not and asked me. That little midget went into a-hole mode directed towards my mom who was laughing at the fact the camera was foreign to her. How fricking dare this woman not know how to work this college kid's camera. I did my best to ignore this until December 25, 2004, but when he left I say frick him.
I ignored it because I wanted to like him, but he was oozing a frick you vibe to all and it was impossible to forget the head coach being rude to my mom. Supposedly he bitched to the Sugar Bowl so much about that boat ride that they no longer do it.
He fakes a smile well in the pic. And nice top-button buttoned, you fricking geek.
I hate him for leaving LSU on Christmas Day. I hate him for lying about going to alabama. I hate him for going to alabama. And I hate him for winning at alabama. frick you, nick saban. Die in an ICU 10 days after burning in a fire. And STTD,N.

And if you and the guy before you would have read my post thoroughly you would have realized that I have no problem with Les. As I said, he is a decent coach who surrounds himself with excellent coordinators and is in an excellent situation. His results are unprecedented. I don't want him to go anywhere nor do I think he will go anywhere.
That said, what makes him an above average coach isn't that he is a genuine guy, brings out the most of his players, takes the fall, blah blah blah, it's that he wins football games. No matter how ugly they are at times, he wins.My argument wasn't that he isn't excellent, it's that it's not his personality that makes or breaks his excellence.
Now is he considered as highly regarded as Saban? No, and again, that goes back to winning. Whether you are a dick or the pope, college football revolves around winning games and championships, and Nick has done one of those thing a whole hell of a lot better.

I met him once at a function. He acted like he was just enduring the moment. This changed when I introduced my brother to him and mentioned he was on the team while in college. His tone changed completely.

can you make this make sense?
For chrissake, people, about a half-dozen of you have nothing better to do than pretend like you're too dim to figure out what this means? I just ran it through three on-line grammar checks, no errors found....I think it would be slightly clearer if 'run ins' were hyphenated- 'run-ins' - but still...how much clearer could it possibly be?
Did (anyone actually at LSU) (when Saban was coach) have ( run-ins) (with him) ?.....
"Ooooh, I'm so confused!!! What does it mean????"
Jeez, it's a good thing there were no big words and commas and stuff because your heads would have all exploded...

She said she couldn't sleep for the headboard slamming from the room next door. Door to that room opens up and Bingo! It's Saban. He invites us in to meet his wife, they were both very nice, we had a hard time keeping a straight face. He may have lost the game, but he took care of business!
Gotta wonder if he pounds her a little harder after he loses.
Let's hope she's bruised, blistered, and bow-legged Sunday morning!

Maybe he's a really busy guy who doesn't like to talk about things that are negative/embarassing for him.

Yes...I was digging a ditch around Highland Road and he stopped, rolled down his window, and made a lewd comment
Tossed me a little debbie fudge round and headed on his way.

The melt down of the Bama nation would be a sight to see if he did jump ship! Lol

Yes. A big run-in; but can't disclose the details.

he is a character no doubt. I met him at coaches luncheons in atlanta, fan days, TAF tours. bigtime douchebag overall, great coach though.

He showed up to vote in 2002, and people in line were asking about what happened against Auburn and he left without voting because he couldn't interact with people as a human being. It was pretty funny. He really is a world class a-hole
He is justified. He is in a public setting and the 'fans' way to interact with him is to ask for a justification/explanation - about a loss. Fans feel entitled to explanation of every being action in a game.
If you were an auto mechanic and were out and about, would you like to be asked about auto problems - all the time.
We have a narrative. Saban is an a-hole. We only relay stories that meet that narrative.
Les Miles and clock management. Clock issues are discussed way more often due to intense focus on Les' actions vis-a-vis clock management.
Andy Reid and a few other coaches in NFL are also accused of similar issues. Now Reid is in a new place. The narrative at the new place is taking shape now. If Reid wins his division or does a job comparable to Broncos the clock stories will be urban legends relayed by Eagle's faithful. Like 3rd and Chavis by Tennessee fans.
Bama fans might call Saban focused where LSU fans have been consistent in calling it assholery. The more we talk about Saban, we (LSU fans) come across as jilted exs.

Saban just isn't a "people person." And yes, he's probably gruff and abrupt, but lots of successful people are like that.
He's clearly uncomfortable in social situations. And remember that he lives in a fish bowl, which has to wear on you after awhile.
Cut the guy a break, he's a great football coach who isn't warm and fuzzy and who doesn't like dealing with the media. That doesn't make him an a-hole.
By the way, the jealousy on this board is obvious. If he was still our coach, we'd love the guy.

So he pushed a 7 year old and said "GET OUT THE WAY!"
I met him one time. He was cordial. Really didn't have a problem with him or anything.

During his final season in 04, I think before the Vandy game. A friend got me into the hotel/conference center or wherever where the team eats lunch before the game. I was out in the little courtyard area talking to some other fans when Saban came darting out and pushed someone's, must have been 7 year old son, and said "Get out of my way!"
Seems legit.

You think? Many didn't love him when he was here. What's difficult for many is to differentiate the Saban at LSU and the Saban at Alabama. He's a much better coach with much better results there. Take his 5 year LSU results and compare them with Miles and you see very little difference. Miles is even better in some regards. The very thing people criticize Miles for is what we had in Saban here- 2 or 3 losses a year on average. To listen to some just assume that after a 5 year pattern Saban would have reeled off 3 or 4 titles in a row is humorous.

My cousin had terminal cancer and idolized coach saban and a visit was setup through make-a-wish. During the visit Nick pulled the plug on my cousins ventilator, killing him. Then he just left without saying goodbye. True story.
What kind of a-hole doesn't say bye when they leave?
