OMG this! Does anyone think Smith and Harris would have returned if they won the championship last year? Stop with these false comparisons.

Most won’t like this answer, but the correct answer is culture. Nick Saban has built a fantastic culture at Alabama that makes players buy in to what they have there. They truly enjoy being a part of that culture.
Ok, sure they get great benefits (ie Chargers, suits, etc), but that doesn’t keep juniors from staying instead of going pro.
How many Bama players opted out this year compared to LSU?
Same goes for Clemson. The culture at these two schools, for football players, is significantly better than LSU’s.
That is the biggest thing O, or any head coach, here is challenged to do. Build a winning culture that elite players want to come to, and play here for as long as possible.

Not sure about Harris, but Smith came back to improve his stock. He had a chance to be the man this year with Jeudy and Riggs gone, and it worked out for him. He didn’t get hurt and put up big numbers. (compare that to a guy like Chase, whose stock was already at its peak)
The other thing is, some guys go to Alabama to win SEC and/or national championships. LSU took that chance from them last year. Maybe they didn’t want it to end like that.

Etienne is in the NFL if they won last year. Again, false comparisons. Did Derrick Henry stay after they won a championship? Did Deshaun Watson?

Saban advises kids to not leave early unless they are first round projected.
That was his philosophy when he was here also.
LSU fans forget that was our policy not that long ago.

Bama is an outlier. Their recruiting is an absolute machine it’s not that they get guys to come back necessarily but they reload every year. LSU recruits well but not at that level.

Rent free on Christmas Day and you’re completely unashamed by it

Then why did Tua Jeudy Ruggs Willis and McKinney leave? It’s about where they would have been drafted, Smith and Harris would not have been first rounders last year

They care way more about the university, winning national championships and the culture at Bama.

Both are great players but Najee is what made that offense work. They also have an experienced QB to make the throws and we haven’t even started talking about an OL that completely dominates everyone they play. Not hard when all you have is 5 & 4 stars.

Wrong
Those guys, plus leatherwood, were/are 1st-2nd rdrs and came back. Had they left, they would have made millions this year!

How in the world does Ala. get these guys to stick around for their senior seasons?

Agreed. But that doesn’t mean you ignore the outlier when that outlier is the best at what they do! Would be stupid to ignore it.

I think Saban sells “draft stock” while we sell “get there”.
Posted on 12/25/20 at 10:38 am to DrD
Saban tells his guys if they aren’t sure fire first rounders, they should return to school. For the most part, his players listen and come back to continue developing. This is the way it should work at LSU.

Joe burrow wouldn’t have gone that high had he left his junior year. Probably not even 3rd round tbh.
Remember the image Saban had floating around social media? We were touting how many players we had in the NFL while they were touting how much money Bama players were making. Staying another year gets the players more money more times than not.
People like Fournette’s draft stock wasn’t getting any higher. Their process sometimes doesn’t have them seeing the field until their junior/senior season.

Top classes every year can afford that. It’s hard to tell a 5* RB he can’t play until he’s a junior when you’ve got 4*’s in front of him.
Saban can because he has a plethora of 5*’s and they’re content getting championships until it’s their turn.
The recruiting circle.
