In reality he could have never played quarterback for Saban at LSU. He wasn't a good enough thrower in the pro style offense. He certainly had a good run under the Spread Option Rich Rodriguez offense at WV.

We've got speed, but we also have size too. I'm not too worried about Devine running wild, just worried about him on screens. Those could kill us, this is a very aggressive defense, and I'm assuming we'll be stacking the box.

Devine would have likely been a 5 star recruit and the major schools would have pursued him had he not had academic and offfield issues.
Slaton was a 3 star recruit and on nobody's radar. Pat White was ALSO a 3 star player out of HS.
Devine could have easily been a top 10 recruit.
I know that confusing and all but if you are recruiting against maryland then that means that a whole hell of a lot of teams passed on a player already.

wrong, wrong, wrong. the kid was not a prop/did not fail to qualify, etc. people were afraid he wouldn't get his test scores and backed off before he surprised them. we stuck with him the whole way so he stuck with us. he had an extremely messed up childhood and most people in his shoes wouldn't have made it this far. he's been a great kid in Morgantown. every team has its knuckleheads but Devine is not one of ours.

That is correct. It was more than just academic too it was all the off field issues. The kid wasnt going to drop through every crack but the top recruiting schools took a pass and thats why he wasnt heavily recruited. Without the academic issues and baggage he would have been a highly sought after recruit. Of course I dont think he would be playing for WVU if that would be the case.

He was simply trying to say that WVU (the program, not this years team) has faced defenses as tough, or tougher, than the LSU defense they will face tomorrow night. Yeah, we all know that years past has nothing to do with this team. But the same people talking about how WVU won't be able to do anything against LSU's defense were the ones who thought that LSU was going to win by 7 TD's against UNC (as if they were playing with 4 guys instead of 11)

it was this, and personal issues
1. he grew up in a broken home (and broken is nice). i think both of his parents have AIDS and he was somewhat homeless. this is why deion "adopted" him, and devine didn't exactly handle that exit well
2. he had at least 2 kids when being recruited
3. there were rumblings/rumors of strong gang ties (which became louder with how he left deion). very strong connections to being taken care of by gangs, not gang activity
it was a lot more than just grades/tests

im pretty sure for every 3 star kid that does well in college there are hundreds more that performed worse.
Im pretty sure its been researched that as a whole 5 star kids end up in the NFL more.
But the point wasnt that a 3 star kid would never make it. The point was that Devine would have never been a WV player had he not had off field issues and bad grades. The kid would have went to a top program.
