The point that seems to be overlooked...

The human body can only take X amount of years in the LB position

He is never going to get that year of earnings back (played for free)

Your probably right, but even if he only gets 3 million, hes not exactly screwed. Nothing is as good as going get the money, but if he stays it ain't like he risking a life of poverty.

Love it when fans count athlete's money for them.

Some of you are crazy and don’t understand how this works.

Let’s compare Devin white to Patrick Willis. Seems reasonable.

Willis made 42 million over 8 years in the nfl. Sure 10 million is nice, but not as nice as 42 million.

“Total disability”

Not being able to play football does not equal total disability. So just because you get hurt and never play again does not mean $10 million dollar payout.

What is 10 mil compared to maybe 30 to 50 mil over career and endorsements.

In such a case, a GoFundMe for him would bring at least $2-3M.

"According to industry professionals, the general rule is that a top-10 pick will qualify for $10 million of permanent total disability with a $5 million loss-of-value rider. The 10 to 20 picks would be looking at $5 to $7.5 million of PTD and $2 to $3 million in loss of value. Picks in the 20 to 30 pick range would be around $5 million total disability."

Doesn't Vonn Miller make like $20 million a season?

A one-time $10 million doesn't really measure up, does it?

feel like several guys from this team will go on to do great things not football related, specifically Devin White, Foster Moreau, and Garrett Brumfield.

What are the stories on Moreau and Brumfield? Future MDs, attys, or engineers?

by position, LBs are near the average for career length at 3yrs. Just behind QBs at 3 yrs 1mo. On the extremes are OL at 3y8m, and WRs at 2y2m.

However, 8 months is a lot of money.

What these numbers really reinforce is the importance of that 2nd contract. On the average, that's the one you end your career on.

So to me the real question isn't time at position (or under contract) it is this: Does delaying that start point increase that SECOND contract.

Just like at our jobs many times where the raises put you depends on where you started at. Raises don't go down, but they don't bring everybody to the same pay point either. So the bigger the rookie contract (pre-defined by draft position since the new 2011 CBA), the bigger the 2nd contract (which, on the average, will be your last).

If you go from struggling to make final cut to being a shoe-in to make it to year 2 by staying: YES

In Devin's case, an extra year will NOT change that second contract at all. It will be determined by his rookie (and 2nd year) performance at, and only at, the NFL level. Delay might not hurt, but it will not help.

Hence he should go.

Barring a bad combine, which would be really weird considering his work ethic, he’s a top 10 pick. What would you come back for? Top 5? Kinda splitting hairs.

Only reason he comes back is if he truly believes we can win the national championship next year, and that’s IF a natty at LSU outweighs a year of NFL money.

It’s fun to talk about it, but HE GONE.

How is anyone being selfish, no one is interfering with his dream, he'll make the decision. Besides, his dream might be another year at LSU.

He will also have a college degree and could get a job almost anywhere in Louisiana he wanted on top of being a millionaire from the insurance policy.
