re: Depth on defense is LSU’s weakest link, if LSU can avoid injuries there, it’s a huge deal

I think the secondary will gel. We have some young talent and have typically played younger guys because of a myriad reasons. This year will be better than the last few. The transfers have experience and Toviano will kill it.

Does any team [at this juncture in time] have all of the answers at all the positions and all depth needed lest their 5 Stars who are really now 6 Stars cuz their trajectory went nuclear when their experience and all time great numbers broke the record books?
I'm talking at least 18 to 20 starters returning.
Don't believe you will find a single one.
Youth will have to be served and some Freshman will have to step up like last year with Perkins and Taylor.

We have lots of bodies at DB and LB. We have several players that have played double digit games at lower levels of competition. We don’t have any superstars, but there is definitely depth. It’s not like we have true freshmen backups. There are upperclassmen backups at every position on defense.

You have 23 DB’s on the roster. It was a weakness last year also.
Last years weakness, DL, injury hit the first game, Maason Smith goes down.
Another weakness, OL, Wire leaves, Delly goes down.
This season, DL is a strength, same with OL.
Kelly is very close to getting the roster where he wants it. Every place Kelly has gone, he’s built his roster!

Injuries always become a factor in the secondary unfortunately.

LB- front line players are great, lack backups
We usually have two Lbs on the field. Assuming Greg Penn is LB3, that is a hell of a backup.

CB- lacks front line player, lot of bodies
I agree with you here.

Safety- biggest issue on team. Lacks top end talent & depth & traditional traits found in good safety play
We have a couple of good guys in Burns and Brooks, but like corner, we need to see what the new guys, and young guys, can do.

let Perkins patrol the wide side of the field
No way! I want Perkins to be what the QB sees first when he looks up from center. Put him in the middle where he can cover the entire field preventing the QB scramble. That guy was a heat seeking missile last year and did a lot of his damage from the middle LB position playing off the ball. A lot of people think it was all coming off the end, and he WAS effective from there, but he was effective from everywhere.
I’m sure when it’s a sure passing down they will put him on the edge.

That was really our weakness in 2019 as well. This is the deepest our defensive line has been in a while. Really just depends on Welch and the transfer corners. If they pan out then we will have a good defense this year.
