Depth on defense is LSU’s weakest link, if LSU can avoid injuries there, it’s a huge deal

According to the BR paper, - “Answers separate good from special for LSU”

A majority of LSU offense is returning…transfers have patched holes on defense…but LSU is an injury or two away from being in a precarious spot at safety, linebacker, and cornerback… if starters remain healthy, LSU should have a chance to repeat as division champions.

I would have to agree with that.

LB- front line players are great, lack backups

CB- lacks front line player, lot of bodies

Safety- biggest issue on team. Lacks top end talent & depth & traditional traits found in good safety play

Yep it’s pretty scary when you look at the DB Depth chart. If they stay healthy LSU will be more than OK. If injuries become a factor our games may become track meets.

We don’t lack depth at cb or lack talent. We lack experience playing together and under House. This is a big unknown and could really make or break us. Boom or Bust?

This is pretty much it. Safety is the biggest oversight on the team and I'm still confused as to why this was not a harder push in the portal especially with Burns being injury prone.

Look for a true freshman to get plenty of looks in fall camp. Elite talent is there but it comes with risks. That’s your quarterback in the secondary who would be targeted to confuse.

The defense should be 4-2-5 with Perkins in a Jabrill Peppers star safety type role.

Have both of your safeties with a deep coverage shell, protect your corners, let Perkins patrol the wide side of the field, get pressure with your DL and let Speights and company rotate in at ILB

The secondary in general is far and away the biggest question mark and potential Achilles heel on this team. Front four are going to need to get reasonably consistent pressure.

Crazy thing is that exceptional DL play can mask deficiencies in the back end. Defense is a lot easier if you can get pressure only rushing 4.

Every great defense starts up front. Block eating lineman and consistent pressure from the edge with minimal blitzing make even your backup LB’s and safeties more effective.

I feel like our interior guys are proven commodities, but being able to get consistent pressure off the edge is going to be huge this year. I’m not worried about teams running on us this year.

We have some time to find some depth. Play the freshmen. If they’re any good, they won’t stick around to ride the bench. Might as well get them in the game.

wut

no. that still doesn't solve your depth issues at S and it's even more perplexing in a scheme that needs so many DBs. they have a lot of depth at CB but nothing really there for experience/proven.

someone is likely going to move to S. I think the freshman Toviano(sp?) will play there as I always thought that would be his natural position at LSU.

I have a feeling first game is going to be rough so our offense better buckle down. going to take awhile to get the chemistry going in secondary.

based on spring it looks like alexander and welch as perimeter CBs but I'd have to think dulce is expected to push somewhere maybe nickel at minimum. harris looks way behind all the other CBs and it looks like his big holdup is he's clueless how to play zone which is going to get you to ride the pine very quickly in house scheme.

That’s not as true as it used to be. Gotta have athletes that can cover the field. Offenses are just too dynamic to have a one dimensional defense anymore.

ETA: Back when we used to be able to physically beat up on teams, that would have been a sound strategy. But now overly aggressive defenses get targeting penalties and ejections. It’s a skill game now. DBs have to be able to play. The DL can only mask so much.
