re: Defense: Begins and Ends with the Front 4

1. We still have a front 4. Whether Chaisson puts his hand on the ground or not he’s the 4th man more often than not.
2. I wouldnt Guarantee Fehoko, Logan or Ferrell a draft spot. None of them were as productive as Neal, Gilmore or Lacouture who all went undrafted. And it’s not like they’re all physical specimens.
Do you see any sure fire first or second day DEs out of that group?
3. Thomas is not on the team. That’s part of the issue
4. I’m not blaming Aranda. I am Not really blaming anyone, but these last 3 classes haven’t been as good as we would have hoped.
Realistically when LSU was great we had multiple 1st/2nd round guys on the line each year.

Not true. We are very good against the run. We just don't get much pass rush from the big guys.
BTW, our entire front four is getting drafted. Lawrence, Logan, Shelvin and Chaisson.

Ok... there is a lot. Being a hand fighter, having active feet, leveraging blocks, beat and defeat blocker, keep separation from block, maintain pursuit... and that not all but the primary ones. spin moves and correct hip alignment are also very important. So, as you can see, it's all very complex and complicated.. personally, I love D-line play as it implements havoc and pressure on an offense no matter how good it is... QB play and D_Line play is where it is...

If you can’t get pressure with your front 4 you are going to have a hard time. Look at the top end defenses they aren’t getting pressure with a ton of blitzes.
Do you consider rushing the Buck linebacker a blitz? Because our base defense only has 3 down linemen.
Aranda's best pass rushing defenses are predicated on using the three down linemen to take on blocks while disguising where the fourth rusher will come from out of the four linebackers or the nickle. That is why you've seen our linebackers have so much success the last few years. His entire scheme is based on setting the linebackers up for success and creating confusion for the opposing offensive line.
For example, LSU took a kid who was a running back in high school and turned him into the 5th overall pick in the NFL draft (the highest drafted linebacker out of LSU, ever).

The problem is they’re all getting drafted on potential not production.and idk if slogan gets drafted if he left this year. Definitely no first two days.
Gilmore has 7.5 sacks in 2017 and didn’t get drafted.
That’s more than our front 4 combined.

LSU doesn’t have a “front 4” Sammy. It’s a front 3.
Yeah, 3 down linemen & 4 LBs is the front 7.

Don’t waste your breath with the retards on here that can’t grasp this fact. They think our DL is supremely talented because they said so in the beginning of the season.

Not really.
You can but bringing 4 is still in my
Mind in the realm of a minimal pass rush.

We need an upgrade at DL coach.
If it's not Aranda's scheme, and it's not recruiting, then it is this. I've theorized all season that DL isn't getting the attention it once had due to CEO running the bigger picture.

No because Watt originally went to Wisconsin as a TE before he moved to defense but even still that would be a prime example of "bargain basement shopping" & getting the most out of the type of player they were able to recruit there.

For the most part rushing defense hasn’t been the issue. Outside Ole Miss we haven given up over 150.
If you include Ole Miss we’re allowing 3.74 yards a carry.
Our passing Defense is 73rd and we’re 64th in Sacks.

Auburn lost the natty to FSU because they had a good front four and a poor secondary, so you are wrong.

I think it may have something to do with Aranda being used to "bargain basement shopping" at Wisconsin. It was a challenge for him to get elite talent there. He got used to settling & making it work there in the Big 10. It's different in the SEC. You better have the horses & 2-3 elite, game changing players on your unit every season. Aranda has seemed to do a good job of getting horses but he has failed to be able bring in those elite, game changing players in the front 7 outside of Devin White
I mean I dont Think anyone expect Aranda to be the guy who’s mostly responsible for getting DL to school.
He’s not that bad a recruiter, but he’s not the main point of attack usually.
I expected More out of O but really Meatball has been a nonfactor. Of Course this class is awesome so I have To give major props so far.
And I agree Chaisson should be getting to the QB more.

He values Lbers and I just don’t like how he coaches the Dline. Love DA and he’s always been very good up until this year. I believe O has rectified the DL issues for the future. We need some of these Stud freshman (nxt yr) to step up and play early. We won’t be able to contend with a defense outside the top 20 w/o Joe Burrow next year. Imo

There isn’t a coach alive that wouldn’t take all 5 stars if offered. We have just been missing on them.

True. We have solid players but not a 5-star guy who turned out to be a legit difference maker. Put Glenn Dorsey, Tyson Jackson, Michael Brockers in there and your whole D-line looks better. (I can't recall if those guys were all 5-stars out of HS but they played like that in college.)

What’s missing up front is physicality! We dont push people, we don’t overwhelm anyone.
We get pushed around. I think Shelvin can be physical..... but that it.
The rest try to be quick and if they don’t get penetration they get pushed.
Even our l.b’s aren’t physical enough.
With that said i think they all can be!! Its a mindset a 60 minute im gonna beat your arse mindset!

its simple, aranda is butt hurt that the offense gets all the credit and he is just mailing it in now not even trying to be ready and not making any game day adjustments

Well I've been saying this for years. A stout DL is the difference from a great defense and an elite one.
LSU's DL has been soft. While Shelvin does good, he's not a guy built for getting pressure. Bama has had that at DT in guys Johnathan Allen (12 sacks as a junior 10.5 as a senior), and Quinnen Williams (8.5 sacks 19.5 TFL), among others. LSU's DL has been poor the last two years. In 2016 we were stout in run defense (and could at least get some pressure on the QB), and in 2017, we could get to the QB. We haven't one of those complete ELITE DL teams since 2012 though.
I know Aranda's defense relies more on great LBs getting to the QB, but when you don't have a force at LB (Debo Jones, Devin White), the other LBs can't make their plays. Divinity was supposed to be THE GUY at LB after White left, but his problems have kept him out of the lineup for the better part of the year leaving LSU with no true leader out there. Deposit has played hurt and soft this year leading to no leader on the defense at all this year.
Honestly, we need a lot of player help on defense. Guys that want to hit you in the mouth and are strong at the point of attack. We have a few like Stevens, but not enough.
