contracts have buyouts, so as long as you pay the buyout, you're technically honoring the contract...but second, you, nor I, nor Dan, have any idea what was going on behind the scenes. It has been posted on hear several times in the past few months that some big-wig was going to push hard to get Miles fired at the end of the season. This may have been Miles way of calling their bluff.

Miles seven year contract gives lots of security to Miles and nothing to LSU.

it gives them stability in recruiting, other coaches were already spreading possible coaching staff turnover to recruits

any coach that isn't hired at a particular job was never a candidate, nor did they ever receive an offer from that school. The one that is hired is always "the guy we wanted all along"

True. Contracts are agreements that are legally enforceable, but parties to those contracts are free to modify or change terms anytime they mutually agree to do so. Changes in circumstances often lead parties to renegotiate. Happens all the time in business as well as sports. It is perfectly normal. It is unlikely that when Miles and LSU signed the 2007 contract that either party expected or understood that the contract would remain unchanged for the entire term of the contract. In fact such employment contracts for employees in high demand, or who have options for other employment, are periodically renegotiated in the normal course of business as the circumstances dictate. Why everybody got in such a snit really is the question.

T-inridgeland,
While what you say is generally true, you leave out some important factors:
Employmetn contracts are kinda differnet and their enforceability is subject to important public poolicy exceptions and rules of construction.
First, while the employer is bound for the term, the employee is never required to work for a term, as that would constitute a form of indentured servitude.
Second, any non competes built in will be strictly construed against the employer.
As a result long term employment contracts, like Les' give Les security of income for the term, but gives LSU no corresponding security for his services.
The primary benefit for the employer for a long range contract is that the compensation is set for a longer period..
And both parties know that.
So, when the employee (miles) comes back to renegotiate salary in a long term contract, he gets his cake and eats it, too.
Now Les has renegotiated both price AND term.
And Alleva has let him get away with it,

I think the point here s that Les Miles is honored to coach football at LSU.

If he "entertains" any more ideas about coaching anywhere else, Alleva should fire him on the spot. Boom!

Do not tell me even for a second that Miles did not play LSU.

And LSU responds with a new contract and it worked for Leslie.

I am saying enough of this crap....next time (and the is is the second) take that new big job and bring in someone in who cherishes ever moment of being HC at LSU.

I like Miles but enough of the games.....if you want a raise, sit down like a man and ask.

What bother s me is that he may not have HAD to ask...
I've got real problems with how Allvea handled this.
If the Arky rumnor had nothing to do with decison, they both would have been better off delaying a decison for a few weeks to reach and announce a deal.
Doesn't smell right...

C'mon, Choctaw. Many of these ranters are the same guys who declare Miles is too much of an idiot to run a major football program, only wins cause Chavis call all the defensive plays (except of course when the defense cost LSU a game), and can't land the quality recruits that we Really need yet, somehow also believe he has teams far to talented to loose 1 or 2 games a season, is getting offers from other schools all the time and has the smarts/savy to con Aleva int extending and sweetening his contract.
I'm not sure arguing or pointing out facts will help.

Nitwit,
Your comments are generally correct about employment contracts as far as the policy side of things. However, as I pointed out, the reality is that contracts in these kinds of cases are often renegotiated as a normal thing. Nobody on either side seriously expects contract terms in long-term employment contracts of in-demand employees to remain stagnant. Miles' contract was already under renegotiation. He had won the SEC and had gotten to the BCSNCG. He had not had a raise since 2007. While LSU did't have to legally give him a raise and extension, what he got, he was going to get anyway. The finalization of the deal and announcement were moved up because of the need to put an end to the Arkansas speculation, nothing more.

If they had waited, we would have gone through perhaps weeks of rampant internet specualtion and unrest, which could have a negative effect on team bowl prep and recruiting. They did the prudent thing.

Didn't read all this, but I think it was kind of silly to give him a raise. Should have called his bluff. He'd leave a destination job (which LSU is now) for a lesser position voluntarily. Has that ever happened?

If he wins on Jan. 9, he's the highest paid coach.

And yes, there are plenty of coaches that we could bring in that would win (not Gruden, Saban and the ones all the rantards would want)

Which in all likelihood he was planning to do anyway. Discussions were already underway. It wouldn't be a surprise if the raise had already been worked out in principal before hand.

The announcement I heard on Sirius 91 said this was already in the works for after the bowl game. With the Arkansas rumors they went ahead and did it now.

Who cares what Dan Patrick says? How large of an audience does he have? He left for more money right or is he working for purely humanitarian reasons now?

Who cares if Les can use this to make more money and get more for his assistants? Everybody does this. And no, this will not break the bank of LSU!

FYI - contrats are made to be broken; both by the coaches and the schools; Chizik and Dooley. If anyone thinks coaches and schools are simply going to honor contracts because they signed them then you are delusional.

And yes, for all you Saban lovers, he DID THIS EVERY YEAR. It is his MO. And NO, he wasn't winning championships every year at LSU nor winning at much as Miles when he did this so don't excuse him with that stupid argument.

It is important to remember that this is the third time Les has pulled this stunt.

Before the SEC Championship, the second time Michigan came calling and then this week. In ALL episodes, Less Miles could have simply made a statement and it was over. But he played it to the hilt and after the cash register rang up a raise, he expressed his loyalty to LSU.

He was due a bump up since mediocre coaches were approaching his pay level but he should have the "chest" to go see Alleva directly and avoid this media circus.

Somewhere out in recruiting land, an SEC school used this to its advantage.

My understanding is they were serious, and made a real offer, but he never considered leaving so he wasnt seriously thinking about it.

Exactly! As Aleva said CLM was due a raise anyway!
