Re Pellini hire — Do you think Orgeron may have been directed to hire him by someone at LSU that knew him from his previous time here? Therefore no need to interview.

What the frick happened last season?

COVID! A new defensive system and no one had the opportunity to learn it.
What were the players doing this time last year?
Why did the team play better the last three games?

Damone Clark was always a physical specimen on the field but last season was horrible for him because he was expected to be the leader of the defense, or at least the captain for the linebackers.

I find it funny that Blake Baker said Clark is one of the smartest players he’s had over the years and no one puts in more work in the film room. Xs and Os, he said Damone knows his stuff.. which leads to one question. What the frick happened last season?

Damone wasn't really in the wrong position as much as he had no confidence, didn't play downhill AT ALL, and didn't shed a single block the whole season.

He was always a great leader and smart player, hence his teammates voting on him to be a #18.

Hopefully something clicks on the field. I know they've talked about teaching him to get off blocks and play without overthinking so maybe we'll see a great improvement.

I would also throw in Stevens and Stingley. Now Stingley’s regression from his 1st year may have had more to do with his nagging injury but if I learned one thing from last year it’s that none of our returning defenders really took a step forward. That in itself should have been a big warning flag.

I thought Scott Woodard interviewed Pelini, so Ed O didn't feel like he had to interview Pelini.

Moreover, Pelini had been around forever and he knew just what to say and do in any event. As I doubt anyone could have detected from any interview whether or not Pelini had lost the magic.

Hey it happened. We all saw it happen. Let's move on.

I really was expecting Clark to have a Queen kind of season in 2020, but it clearly didn't happen. I don't know what the problems were last season. All I know is they persisted for the entire season.

Hence, I'm glad Pelini is gone and we have brought in new blood. Hence, I will be looking for Clark to make a rebound this season.

Very good question. I think the answer basically is that the linebackers weren't coached...at all.

Pelini was horrible, but most thought he was a good hire, so there's that.

That’s because just like our head coach, the folks on this board didn’t interview him & assumed it would be 07 Pelini.

Our defense will be elite this year, but keep in mind we have a very young team that might make a few early season mistakes. We should be able to lock down anyone we play once we get in to the meat of our schedule.

I would have never admitted to that.

If he can play to his potential in this new system, it will be a tough call as to who are the 3 starters in the 4-3 base among Clark, Baskerville, Strong, and the Clemson transfer Jones

4-3 Base is just the overall build for the team.
We'll be in Nickel majority of the time.
So, that's 2 LBs.

Gotta be one of the worst hires ever

TAF should reduce O's salary based on what they had to pay Pelini
From all reports, it was Scott Woodward that interceded and initiated the Pelini hire. (Just like he did recently with the Daronte Jones hire, in the wake of the Ed "I didn't call Sean Payton to get permission to interview/hire Ryan Neilsen" Orgeron DC fiasco)

Scotty better hope and pray that Daronte works out better than Bo. He hired Baker as a Safety Valve, just in case DJ appears to be in over his head.

Look for Baker to be named Co-DC in charge of Running Game Defense, sometime after the Spring Game, during the Summer or in Fall camp.......

I mean...this is obvious. Many on here including myself were saying Pelini was not only an awful DC hire he was an even worse LB coach which was even evidenced by his time at LSU. They were simply insane letting him coach the LBs. I remember expressing immediate concern on this as he was never a good LB here even when he had good defenses.

Glad to see it. This defense is similar to the one he played in at Southern Lab. He'll play fast and not think as much. I said this would happen as soon as Jones was hired

The pelini hire is likely the worst hire I’ve seen since following LSU sports for the last 28 years. So damn bad.

Well, O should take some of the blame. When the NCAA cancelled Spring practice last year Pelini suggested to O that they not put in the 4-3 last year because within spring practice it would be impossible to do it well. He wanrptedvto put in in by degrees but stay with the 3-4. O said no, go ahead. The only good thing that came of it was the basics were put in for this year.

Neither of which Damone Clark did one time on a football field last year. #18 has a lot to prove this year. Hope he gets it right. Damone seems like a great dude, but he was the worst player on the field most the time last year.
