Damone Clark taking a step forward

Damone Clark was always a physical specimen on the field but last season was horrible for him because he was expected to be the leader of the defense, or at least the captain for the linebackers.
I find it funny that Blake Baker said Clark is one of the smartest players he’s had over the years and no one puts in more work in the film room. Xs and Os, he said Damone knows his stuff.. which leads to one question. What the frick happened last season?
Pelini happened, that’s what happened. There’s no way Damone Clark goes from looking like a future Superstar under Aranda, to looking clueless on the field with Pelini, to Baker saying he’s physical and knows the game!
When Pelini said he wanted the guys to just play last season and use their athleticism, he meant it. There was no system, there weren’t any calls. It was just play fast and be physical lol. I’m expecting substantial improvement from the defense as a whole.
Also Bugg Strong, the juco linebacker from Mississippi is a “heat seeking missle”. Coaches and teammates are saying he’s a big hitter.

Further proof of the complete dumpster fire Pelini was
Gotta be one of the worst hires ever

The absolute worst because somebody doesn’t interview people.
I can’t fricking believe it. I could’ve applied for the Defensive Coordinator job and got the shite lol. Everything would’ve been straight off Madden.

Pelini happened
Idk man. Honestly, I thought Early in 2019 he looked better than Queen. That changed after a few games, but it goes to show the guy wasn’t some trash LB in 2019.

Beyond the lack of interview mess-up, good to see Clark returning to form. Would love to see him have a big year.
No one 'suffered' more under Pelini than him.

TAF should reduce O's salary based on what they had to pay Pelini

If he can play to his potential in this new system, it will be a tough call as to who are the 3 starters in the 4-3 base among Clark, Baskerville, Strong, and the Clemson transfer Jones.

Pelini was horrible, but most thought he was a good hire, so there's that.

Expect Damone to get back to playing more downhill like he was as a Sophomore. Him and Bugg thumping guys and Mike Jones being that Swiss Army knife covering TE’s, backs, and some slots. Has potential to be a really solid unit with guys like Baskerville hopefully back in the mix as well as the Freshman and Sophomores providing depth.

Look like Tarzan played like Jane syndrone. Why did he looked so bad last year, I don't know. We will see what he has this year. Last year was not a good look for him or a lot of players on the defensive side of the ball.

i have absolutely nothing to add to this thread, as I agree to how confusing it was to see Clarks regression, AND, that i childishly laugh every time I see your username.

I hope he kicks arse. We should all probably reset our expectations on everyone since we all know how much of a cluster the whole Pelini saga was from no interview to firing.

The best thing I've heard about Damone this offseason is that they have him playing aggressively up the field. I that he was great at that in 2019 once Divinity got suspended, and then Pelini forced him to play as a true inside LB. I think he can play ILB, but he's always seemed to be more comfortable and instinctual staying closer to the LOS and rushing the passer. Aranda would dial up some delayed blitzes that he and Marcel Brooks really excelled at.

Linebacking group is going to be the biggest surprise of this defense.. staff seems to be putting a LOT more focus on preparation and knowing your role in the defense versus see ball get ball. The secondary will be the X-Factor of this entire team.. we know what the D-Line is going to give us and linebackers will step back up. If we can get safety play back to our typical standards, we have the talent to be the top defense in the SEC. This is the deepest D-Line I’ve seen at LSU since 2011 with probably 5-6 guys who could start at tackle, you’ve got three great defensive ends in Ojulari, Anthony and Gaye, not to mention a lot of guys who haven’t gotten an opportunity to prove themselves but the talent is all there.

No one expected the shite show that was Pelini, but there was no great uproar on here about what a terrible hire he was when we got him.
I really hope this is the last lesson that O had to learn the hard way, as it gets tiring having to defend him all the time.

I’ll believe it when I see it. I want him to be a freak more than anyone else but he was soft as charmin last year and that’s not all because of the coach.

Had really high hopes for Damone. Taking a wait and see approach now
