I think he did some nice things in Baton Rouge. No way he shouldn’t have won something with Roberts, Shaq, Jackson.

He knew how bad basketball rules were being broken and how bad it was in the 80's with regards to recruiting in both football and hoops
He saw how archaic the NCAA was even back then
He fought the ncaa and it's ashame it still took so long for the powers that be actually cared about the well being of the athletes themselves who have made so much money for the schools and organization
the fact that it took an injunction to allow all schools to and conferences to benefit from tv revenue shows out of touch they were
once those coffers opened the ncaa was all about itself
underrated

Given how much disagreement there is regarding him, he’s probably appropriately rated.

Thing I remember most about Dale was that he could take a team not expected to do much and turn them into a Final Four team. Yet he could take some of the most talented teams in LSU history and not get them past the first or second round.

Great motivator but average coach.

Underrated. We had a run where we had one of the longest streaks making the tournament...it was almost expected. He made LSU relevant in BB

Three coaches changed the course of LSU sports history : Nick Saban, Skip Bertman, and Dale Brown. Next question....

Overrated for no other reason than what he wasn’t able to do with that 89-90 team

He took a roster that had, Chris Jackson, Shaq, and Stanley Roberts on it, was preseason #2 in the country and they ended up not winning a single game in the SEC Tourney and only one game in the NCAA tourney.

Rated about right

Brought LSU basketball to life and although they never won it all, there were otherwise some very good times

Now had it ended better minus the LE saga I think there would be more goodwill. Not to mention the meddling which led to Johnny Jones getting the job. God Alleva was such a cuck.

Dale had a certain level of talent he could coach.
He was able to get good players to play way over there heads, but not able to get great talent to be better.
His downfall, at the end, was when he didn't have enough talent to be able to compete even with them over achieving.

He's recognized for taking a dump of a program and making it nationally relevant, and exciting, for over a decade. But people also recognize he failed to get the most out of some really, really talented teams.

. And landed LSU on probation for years

no, Dale had limitations.

Recruiting was very good.

Motivation was excellent.

X and Os: he was pretty bad.

He was like the original CEO style coach before anyone even knew what that might be. His did great when he had a good Xs and Os assistant.

Overall, I think he gets a mixed bag assessment from most (neither underrated OR overrated).

I'm glad we had him.

Jose Vargas

Really the most inconsistent player in LSU history. He had almost as many games that he had no business being on the court, as those games in which he shined. You never knew which Jose Vargas would show up on a given night.

Underrated as a recruiter. He could really recognize talent and manage to bring them to LSU. But...

Overrated as a coach. He had teams with massive talent and could not do anything with them.
