Nothing has been said about the special teams coach. Where does he play a part in this??
Miles has let a lot of people off the hook for this game. Joe Robinson, the defense, chad jones, lafell

I remember someone said that the kick team had been gathered, but once we got to 4th and 26, they were disbanded.

when we asked him about the spike call, he said he didn't know who made the call, then said you can't make that call, with one second, etc. But it was clear he didn't say the call wasn't made, just that it shouldn't have been made.
You got the feeling that, he knew they screwed up, but was saying he knew how it was supposed to go down, not admitting guilt, just understanding. Does that make sense?
I think there was no call, not one thing actually signaled in from the sidelines that resembled an actual play. I really think JJ was left to fend for himself, so he was looking at anyone, he turned to the receivers at one point. Bryan Lazare asked Les what was the call, and he said he'd have to find out. That signaled to me that there was no call. That's the sad part. There were 25 seconds from the ref. ruling it was a catch and a first down for LSU to the ball being placed and cleared before the clock started. The linemen were standing over the ball, the fact that they couldn't get the receivers off and a couple of extra te's on the field to block for a kick was amazing. Add in the fact that they hadn't even thought about it, and it's stunning.
It was like watching a car crash unfold as soon as they started throwing the ball after LaFell's first down. I don't know a lot of football, but if you're in field goal position for the win, why try to get more yardage by the pass, run the ball, secure it, and line up for the field goal. Pick your hash and give it a ride. It truly was something to watch go down live and 30 feet away.

Another question. It does appear that the ONLY scenario Miles planned for was the ball reaching the EZ.
JJ released the ball from his own 42. Considering how little time he'd been getting, Miles really ONLY considered that he'd get off a 58 yard pass?
WOW. The more I observe this shite, the more retarded he gets!!!

If this had played out and the kicker missed the FG, life would be sooooooo much better. I would not have minded losing like that, but this is absolutely assanine.

This is the zillion dollar question
For as long as I played football the last second field goal was something that was worked on at least once every week...you line up the fg unit and snap the ball at the first sound of the whistle as the ball is being set for play.
But yeah, the head scratching starts after the completion to the 31 and it snowballed from there
Posted on 11/23/09 at 2:27 am to ShortyRob
exactly!
the ball was at the 50ish yard line. dropping back to pass for a hail mary is easly 7-8yds.
most QB's cant throw 50yds during the game.
how could he not think there was a good chance the ball wasnt going to make it into the end zone.

It's almost like Gary loses his fricking mind. He made the absolutely perfect playcall on the screen because Ole Miss was selling out with the blitz, then it all went dark in his head.

Do you have any decent video of Miles after the pass to Ridley? Regarding the timeout?
CST didn't show Miles at all during that time frame. The camera was zoomed on the field on Jefferson and the offense. All you can witness is a whistle for the timeout in the background around the 11 second mark on the CST clock.
quote:
Miles looked up at the board and said we have a time out, like as in a question, then he said it to jefferson again, like a statement. then porter said it, pointing to the clock above the press box which did say LSU had a timeout, but joe rob shook his head and told Les he didn't have a time out. I was five feet from all that going down and have that on my mic.
Yeah, that's just about exactly what it looked like on the CST replay. They were definitely talking about a timeout in that small cop-Miles-Jefferson huddle then the timeout talk seemed to continue on with two assistant coaches pointing to the scoreboard yelling at each other a few feet beyond Miles.
quote:
I watched the replay tonight, I don't know what les mouthed, but if that's not the spike sign, I don't know what is.
I brought this up a few pages back. Here's all I've got. Jefferson does a arm down motion right before each snap. Maybe that was the same motion Les was trying to relay to JJ -- just snap the ball...get a play off. I don't know. Maybe I'm reaching, I don't know.

Forget this, even if he did have the arm how could he expect JJ to have the time to let his receivers get down there...HE WAS JUST SACKED ON THE PREVIOUS PLAY

My question, why are they worried about that timeout after the attempted spike and time had expired

Poor Jordy. He is an emplyee of LSU Sports Properties, so he can't say what I'm sure he wants to.
Posted on 11/23/09 at 2:43 am to LSUsmartass
On the PBP, Verne called the big hit JJ took as he released the ball. T-Bob totally WIFFED on his block, not allowing JJ to step into a throw that was sure to be hampered by a lingering ankle injury. He couldn't step into it, and threw it falling backwards; it was all arm.

i'm sure this is germans, but maybe Miles/Jefferson thought there was 2 seconds on the clock?
if there is 2, then spiking the ball made sense.
nevermind, during the post game interview he said that spiking the ball with 1 second left is not an option.
i'm at work and can hardly here anything on the computer speakers.

I didn't see the sidelines except for the few seconds they showed Les doing the hand signal so I don't know what the coaches were doing at the time. Only thing I could think of is the LSU coaches thought they had a timeout so (1) they didn't bother thinking two plays ahead because if they achieved a first down, they'd call timeout for the last play or (2) they thought they had a timeout so when Jefferson completed the pass to Toliver, Crowton/Miles and company did not rush to get a play on the field because they thought they'd have a timeout to get situated...then no one or maybe an assistant told him at the last second that they didn't have a timeout and chaos erupts with different playcalls coming in to JJ. I don't know.
There's just so much that you can't see or hear on TV. We don't know what the assistants are telling him and Cauble and the people at the game are the only ones who can tell us if the sidelines were trying to get a timeout called with 1 second on the clock or something.
One thing I will go look back at tomorrow is to see if my dad was right when he said he thinks Toliver may have tried calling the TO right after he caught it. That would tell us a whole lot because obviously our coaches thought there was a timeout and that's something they would have told their players in the previous timeout.

Then this needs to be said in his interviews and press conferences...something needs to be said other then "I have no idea where that came from"
ETA: but this would have been another lie because in the video posted in this thread you can clearly see "clock it" come out of his mouth.

In tomorrow's press conference, I don't want to hear him mention "well, the want for more time was there."
Yeah, and I want to be in a hot tub with Jennifer Lopez but let's be realistic....
And if this comment shows up, "I thought we had more time."
Just in case it has slipped by him in the past 5 years, no matter what stadium he's at, there are 2 BIG scoreboards on each end of the field that has the remaining time left.
GRRRRRRRRRRRR. Still feel bad for the players. Can you imagine what the redshirt kids are thinking? "WTF is wrong with this guy?"

It is bad when he looks like the most lost person in the stadium, the fricking police escort has to tell him the game is over
