Could Ray Thornton have returned Tua’s ghost fumble for a TD?

Of course it didn’t matter and he made the smart decision by just falling on the ball, but looking at the gif there seems to be a lot of open field in front of him. If he got past Jedrick Wills he would have been gone. One of my favorite LSU plays ever, completely set the tone for the rest of the game.

From the angle he was coming towards Tua and the ball it was the better play to fall on the ball to secure the recovery. He was sprinting full speed directly behind Tua and had to stop his momentum to reach back to recover the ball. If he is coming from the end zone and is recovering the ball directly in front of him then it would have been easy for him to pick it up and run.

With all that said if he chose to scoop it and run from that point he scores.

But then Burrow would only have 59 touchdown passes this year

Right after that gif cuts off, Jaylen Waddle comes flying on to the screen.

I think Thornton could have gone a decent bit, but Waddle would have run him down.

because returning a fumble is a straight foot race like the 40.

I think it was actually better the way it happened. Had Thornton scored, Tua would have been right back on the field and quite possibly would’ve drove down again. BUT, when Burrow came in and made Bama’s D look like Swiss cheese, I believe it mentally set the tone for the day that Burrow wasn’t gonna be stopped...particularly when Chase out jumped the DB and trotted into the endzone. I really believe that’s when the entire stadium collectively thought “oh shite”.

I prefer the long touchdown pass from Burrow to Chase to go up 7-0. Our offense showed we can score on bama’s defense. To answer your question he could have scored a touchdown. That reminded me when Beckwith fell on the Yeldon fumble in 2014. Beckwith could have easily scored if he picked the ball up and we could have beaten Bama that year.

What would Ruggs have done with Brooks, Delpit, Stevens and Chiasson running interference for Thornton down the sideline.

No chance, and I'm glad he didn't even try. Ball was bouncing funny and he was twisting for it.

Luckily it fell right in front of him.

I think Brooks would have had a much better chance had he picked it up off the bounce, was already moving in the correct direction.

Once he secured the ball, he had next to zero momentum going towards the other end zone, so no way.

I say 1% chance that he actually makes it in for a score.

ETA: Only guys there who would have had a realistic shot at a return were Delpit and Vincent, and they ran into each other.
