I love it. what I really love is actually having a center playing center. don't get me wrong - clap was excellent last year as was the great guy we had before him, (his name excapes me, but he was the only good tackle we had in the lineup and he was playing center). fact is though these guys weren't centers, although they both played well there.

Quite a few people on this board were saying he belonged at miss state lol. Cole Smith will be an All American at LSU before he moves on.

Maybe a little bit of coach speak sans motivation here.

Personally, I don't think so.

Cush has been busting his hump ever since he got a 'shock to the system' filling in for Clapp before the season.

If Cole is pushing him, freaking awesome:
A) means Cush won't be getting complacent any time soon
B) means Cole is progressing exceptionally well.

It's a fricking win-win.

I thought Cole was going to be pretty damn good. But to be at that point (considering the significant progress Cush made) this early is very pleasantly surprising. In short, way faster than expected.

If this is the case, then all the fall camp hype around Cushenberry was bullshite

To me, it reads as Smith will be given a shot and looks good at workouts. There is no way that Cregg could know whether or not Smith will actually challenge Cushenberry until they put pads on.

ESPN had Smith rated as the top OC in the nation and the top recruit out of MS. He also performed very well at the UA game. The kid is good. He just needs to add a little weight.

Don't freak out. Spring practice hasn't even started. The coach is just saying he sees the two guys competing in the future for the spot.

"“Right now, going into spring, I look at Lloyd Cushenberry and Cole (Smith) battling,” Cregg said during an interview"

This reads to me like nothing more than a motivational ploy. Cushenberry's had two seasons already. If a true freshman really does push him, then there's a problem!

I wonder if they've thought about Brumfield at center. He's a fifth-year senior with a season of starting experience and I think I remember that his dad is a lawyer so he should be pretty smart.

That's exactly what it is.

He also said this at the bottom of the same article.

"Cregg is searching for the best five players to start on his line, and his current depth chart is "etched in sand," he said. Another junior college transfer, Damien Lewis, could potentially get into the competition at center, he said.

"He’s never snapped a ball before, but you never know. It could be taught and trained," Cregg said. "I’ve got to figure out how to get the best five on the field come game day.""

Why is that? It’s not like a freshman is incapable of starting on the OL and playing well. We had 2 do it in 2017, we had Maea do it before that. Vadal also started as a frosh.

Freshman can play on the OL. If you are worried about the checks, there is no reason Brumfield can’t do the talking. And if you are under the impression that Cole Smith is not talented enough, then you’ve never watched his film.

Maybe Cole is a sleeper, but Lloyd isn't in trouble unless Lloyd can't play. We need five good linemen, and we will surely be short one or two.
