College Football Playoff - 4 Conferences of 16 Teams

Others on here and I have said this before, and while I don't really mind the system as it is and has been, it seems that we are headed in that direction, because it would make the most sense. Adding Texas and Oklahoma strengthens our league, but dilutes the others. Eventually, something will have to change.
Four regional conferences of 16 teams, two divisions of 8. Conference championship, and final four playoff.
This makes sense, and is viable, right?

Except when the SEC Conference has 2 or 3 of the best teams in the country. No conference will get close to matching the overall competitiveness of the SEC.

Four 16 team super conferences, each w/4 pods = 16 teams
No conference champ.
Force rank 16 pod champs & they play at home of higher ranked team = 8 game first round.
4 Game second round played where ever.
2 Game semi final - bid game site out.
Champ game.
Only one extra game from now if no conference champ game.
Each conference gets 4 teams in.
That is 15 games. Spread that $ like they do the Final 4.
No conference champ.
Force rank 16 pod champs & they play at home of higher ranked team = 8 game first round.
4 Game second round played where ever.

Champ game.
Only one extra game from now if no conference champ game.
Each conference gets 4 teams in.
That is 15 games. Spread that $ like they do the Final 4.

You could also do 4 conferences of 16 teams eachdivided into two divisions of 8.
Each team would play 7 division games. The top 4 from each division would play in the conference championship tournament. The tournament would add at most 3 more games so we’re at 10. You would swap divisions in the tournament so the 1 seed from the west plays the 4 seed from the east and so on.
Then you play a national championship tournament with 16 teams. 4 conference champs get automatic bids then fill in the remaining 12 however you like. You could also give the top 2 from each conference an auto bid and fill the remaining 8. This would add at most 4 more games so we at 14 total if you make it to both championship games.

I'm NOT saying it's going to happen, so just hear me out-
the SEC pushes to get 2-4 more teams in addition, go to 18 or 20. You successfully poach Clemson, maybe Florida State.
It then says "too many games in the playoffs" echoing one of the big complaints we're hearing (which may become an issue).
So the SEC says "we're out of the playoffs, we'll just hold our conference championship event".
You already have 2 of the 4 teams that always make it (Bama and Oklahoma), plus LSU and UGA (teams that have made the playoffs)... LSU, Auburn, Florida, Texas, and Oklahoma and Alabama have won 14 of the past 20 national titles.
You add in Clemson and Florida State, and that becomes 19 of the last 22 titles.

SEC will and should be given two teams in this case. SEC will probably have 8 or 9 teams ranked in top 25 every year if texas and OU are added

There are approximately 128 D1 football programs.
So additionally set up two brackets of 64 teams.
The top bracket is the SEC, ACC, PAC and BIG
Four 16 team conferences playing a “season” tournament for the championship.
The remaining 64 teams form an additional four 16 team conferences.
They also play a “season” tournament set up to a championship.
Or an alternate...
Have the SEC absorb the 32 best teams and tell the NCAA to go frick itself and create a “Minor” Professional League

The old P5 model of 64 seemingly has too many teams thus the race for SEC to build 1st mega conference.
Your suggestion of 32 is closer to the final number of schools that breakaway, with really only the Big 10 capable of offering a similar package.
The final number of survivors in this new major college football division will be closer to 40 than 64; it’s easy to trim who doesn’t belong on performance or market size.

Any extended playoff will fail with a quickness. If you are picking a top 12, 4-5 of those teams should be SEC and you are all but guaranteeing an all SEC final. A 16 team playoff should have 5-6 SEC teams, maybe more in some years.
I think teams like Notre Dame and USC want the playoffs to fail because they are popular enough to claim a championship without playing anyone.

If the SEC is expanding then that means they know playoffs are going to get expanded to at last 8 teams. The SEC will try to get 3 or 4 teams in there every year.
