Are there that many top-tier athletes that have played for 4 years in recent times?

Truth is, the difference between a 3rd-5th rounder and an unsigned free agent making a practice squad is ususally 100k-200k a year difference. Most rookie contracts are in the 100-400k range with more on the lower end. Point being there isn't much disparity so sometimes it is better off to stick around if you have a chance of being one of the best in the next years class.

Makes me sad that some people are so blinded by loyalty of their beloved state institution that they look down on athletes who refuse to work for free.
...............................................

Work for free? Ok. Pull their scholly's and IF they can still get in a university of their choice on their own merit then pay them a set amount. I suspect there would be an influx of new greeters at Wal-Mart.

Just a couple of points from a guy who thinks this will hurt college football.

First, Here is a link to a story that was in S.I. a while back that puts the "money" aspect of this argument into perspective.. "Sports Illustrated found that after two years of retirement, 78 percent of NFL players are bankrupt or under financial stress"

LINK

Maybe a college degree and a bit of maturity would help these young guys manage their money.....and maybe the value of a college degree is something too easily dismissed.

Oh i agree with you 100%. I would love to know that "someone" on the collegiate level (should start at home) is constantly in these kids ears letting them know the value of a college education and to look 10..15 years down the road. I would think that the vast majority of student athletes don't look any further than the first big lick they're going to get if they are talented enough to make it to the league. I was/am immensely blessed by being raised in a two parent household and my parents instilled in me the value of a good education and hard work. I in turn have passed that along to my kids; one of which is a student at LSU right now. It truly starts in the home.

Loser: the self-important fan with no skin in the game.

Grow up and wish these young men good luck.

the value of a college education

I know many college graduates that ended up waiting tables or installing insulation. Unless you are getting a specialized degree, that degree really isn't as valuable as you are trying to imply. In one year, the majority of those players make more than a typical college graduate makes in the first 10 years of their job.

Just to let you know I do have skin in the game, you have missed my point and there is no reason to call me a loser. It's just an opinion. The point of my post is that they do make a lot of money.............but in a very short time for an overwhelming majority of these guys........it evaporates and there is nothing left.

These young people have a golden opportunity to get a great education at a great school..............AND play football for one of the best schools in the country with the greatest most supportive fan bases in college football.

My point was simply to repeat that old caveat: don't give up what you want most for what you want now. Geaux Tigers

Sure would like to see these kids stay in school and get a degree along with enjoying their senior season with all the accolades and enjoyment of college life.

That's kind of selfish on your part, don't you think? "I" want these kids to forego a rare opportunity to better their lives by accepting jobs that pay 6-7 figure salaries just so "I" can watch them play 4 years instead of 3.

Would you share the same sentiment about an engineering major who came from a poor family who was offered a 6 figure salary job following his Junior year of school?

Yes, the CFB landscape has changed.

However, I would much rather these 5 star recruits coming to LSU to spend their 3 years.

And I believe most of them see that LSU is better than just about anyone in preparing kids for the NFL. We send more to the pros than anyone.

This will affect the better players and the better programs more and even out the playing field a little bit I.e. A senior led team

Was coming to post this pretty much word for word.

Basketball is this way. It's why the Gonzaga's of the world can compete. I'm pretty sure they took a (5) senior team to the round of 8 one year.

Football's different in that is has 11 players instead of 5, so a "couple of seniors" doesn't make AS big a difference, but I still think the OP is on point.

You hear it all the time from the coaches......what separates really good teams from championship teams? They'll give you leadership as an answer many, many times.

While it's true that someone can lead as a freshmen if they are that dynamic/good, and have that type of personality, nothing can really replace the experience of "being there" for 5 years, imho.

As I watched all the recruit decisions this year more than not each stated, besides the obligatory "I'm taking my talents", that for the "Next 2-3 years I'll be taking my talents". It is now an assumption they will never stay long enough to finish school.
