OM player had just been in a war for 4 hours. Most you could ask of the guy at that moment would be to call heads or tails. I'll cut him some slack.

I think they ask a lot more of the players in overtime than just calling heads/tails

That was my original question. Why have the players out there if they don't make the choice

It didn't have significant impact, but what was up with the referees changing the direction that the Ole Miss player selected.

He clearly selected to go to the North EZ and then the referees said "No, you don't want to do that" and pointed the the South. Nuss protested it but they just laughed him off.

Somewhere in heaven Abner Haynes is having a good laugh.

After the player pointed to the Nirth end zone someone on the sidelines pointed the other way and the ref let him change. Should not have been allowed

You wouldn't be able to change your head/tails call. Seems bizarre that the refs or the sideline can change the call by the player on the field

By not having "significant impact" I meant that we won the game despite it

A very good point.

never saw him point sounth, the refs in the background are the ones who pointed south

They probably just assumed, correctly of course, that Ole Miss wouldn't want the student section side of the stadium.

I hear you, but what is the point of having the player there? Is it just a formality or are they actually asking a question for a real answer.

Everyone wants to play D first in OT. Why are the players there if all they need to do is flip a coin with a camera. Heads for home and tails for visitor.

But that's not the procedure goes. They flip and then you make a choice. He made a choice and then the refs changed it to help him out.

Would've been nice for the refs to help Les Miles with managing the clock all those years. But they didn't. Because that's the coach's role

The only difference maker would be weather. In Baton Rouge on a clear night, there isn't a choice to be made.

I officiated high school football for over 20 years. We would always ask the coach about their coin toss decisions pregame & overtime I don’t know if they do this in college or not. But it appears that is what happened.

If a player makes a stupid choice the refs will definitely double check and make sure that’s what he wants. They’ve done it in the past when a player elects to kick instead of defer after winning the opening coin toss.

Do the refs normally catch the coin toss? That was different

I was just happy they made a correct coin flip decision for once. Quit receiving the ball.

It worked out. We actually have a pretty good record in SEZ if my memory is correct.

At first, the Ole Miss player pointed to the north end zone then quickly changed the end zone he wanted to play. Nussmeier said "he picked that way first doesn't he have to play that way?" Nuss kinda laughed. The refs allowed him to change and play the south end zone. Wasn't that big of a deal. Would have been funny if he hadn't changed and to see the reaction from Kiffin when he realized what he had done.

I think he said we want to be on that side, not play in that direction. Regardless, LSU won
