Yeah, I'm not laughing.

I'm fricking pissed.

That was a really dumb decision for a coach who gets paid a lot of money.

Yeah. I would rather let Reid swing.

I’m sure he consulted with our awesome hitting coach on that stellar decision

Bunting in that situation was absolutely a solid decision. Not pinch hitting for Hughes is what was questionable. Even then, with the infield back, you would hope that Hughes could at least put a ground ball down somewhere. I was calling for a safety squeeze of Hughes, although that was also risky because Hughes isn't the best bunter and Garza is slow.

I wonder how we have made it to a super regional? If only the coaches had the advantage of hind sight as the contributors to the rant have we might be undefeated.

Us winning has nothing to do with how bad of a coaching decision this was. I’m with the poster above. Bunting was the right call, sending Hughes to the plate was the mistake.

No, they had Reid sac bunt to get two runners into scoring position, move a runner to third base with less than two outs AND to avoid setting up a double play.

Your hatred of Hughes exceeds your knowledge of baseball fundamentals.

I’m of the view that bunting ie giving up a free out is never the right call. I suspect however that people bitching about the bunt would also bitch he he swings away and gets an out

Reid could have crushed a 2 run double and some would be saying "a bunt would have been the smarter play".

Nope, I was completely WTF when Hughes came to the plate, and I like the kid. It was a terrible decision, and we still won in spite of it.

How does bunting Reid and bringing Hughes to the plate AVOID the double play? It's the same damn result. You still end up with runners in scoring position and 2 outs????

Even if Reid doubles up, and Hughes is the 3rd out, guess what? The score doesn't change that way either.

It was a poor coaching decision. In the same line of almost giving their Hal Hughes an IBB. Almost. Because Paul thought they were going to PH for their Hughes (hmmmm), and when they didn't it panicked Paul, and he had to change his call. Even Paul knew that he should PH with your worst hitter, because he expected USM to do it.

Late in the game let the DH hit for Hughes and make Peterson close and hit.
