I would argue that the biggest factor was we were going into 2018 with a new QB that got to LSU over the summer. We had 2 new starters at RB. No LF or Guice or anyone resembling either. All new starters at all 3 WR spots and 2 returning OL starters.
We were dead last in the SEC in returning offensive and defensive production and 114th in CFB. Add what was initially believed to be one of the toughest schedules (Miami and Auburn ended up being soft) and the prevailing narrative was it would be too tough for a young team to overcome.
This was what I read in most pre-season articles before the season. I don't recall any saying anything about the Troy game. I don't doubt that may have been a small factor, but inexperience and schedule was the overarching theme.

The description of 2018 is spot on... the O haters won’t ever agree with it though.... they make it sound like we had more experience than any LSU team ever......

2019 brings promise. LSU finally has an experienced QB with at least a moderate skillset. The WRs and OL will also be experienced. We’ll too have playmakers at RB. This should be a fun season.
Totally agree.
Except a better OC couldve had a way more productive offense.

Can't remember when I saw a team do this. Talent is never maximized for various reasons.
But the Tigers should have finished the season 12-1. Im pretty sure most people were highly disappointed in both the Florida and A$M games.
