“ when offense and a passing game was the priority”
I know this is like beating a dead horse, but that’s always been the biggest mystery to me. How in the world did we go from supposedly going after 2 respected offensively minded HCs to settling on a DL coach to combat a passing game weakness that had been going on for yrs and is unfortunately still going on.

Well we threw for 2900 yards last year and got another 400 yards rushing out of the position
While some things still need to be improved I feel that's pretty good production from a first year starter
I don't think it was great, but I certainly think many of you are underrating that aspect.

He went from a 9/8 TD/INT ratio to 24/6 under Mullen this past year. You’re supposed to be better than this...

But MSU is not a bad program. Dantonio proved that. He had 1 year better than 7 wins out of 5 seasons and lost all of his bowl games. His best season was 9 wins. In 12 seasons Dantonio had 10+ wins 7 times and 4 Big Ten champs. So none of this is to say Saban isn't a great coach, but he still needs all the right pieces to fit to be at a very high/elite level.
He won at Toledo, LSU, and Alabama right away. So MSU is an outlier from there. And I definitely disagree that he "needs all the right pieces." He build the right pieces everywhere he goes, he just didn't do it a high level one time, but was on his way.
quote:
Correct. This year. Should have happened 2 years ago and it still is far less than OSU or Bama's shadow staff.
So if O loses 3 games this year, then we're good? He should be gone?
quote:
Doesn't Saban need this? See MSU. Like you said he was getting there in year 5.
Outlier. Plus, the guy routinely fires his staff and reorganizes. The only reason Saban has the top talent is he builds, develops, and creates the opportunity for the right talent to execute. The guy has had like 6 OC's in 7 years and still gets to the NC. He doesn't have the best OC or DC in the country actually, so no, he doesn't need the best talent.
quote:
O needs to fight his own insecurities and step outside his comfort zone with hires. He then has to trust them. Alleva needs to either support him or cut him loose. IDK if O can be the HC to get us to elite status, but the mindset needs to change from the top down or it won't happen.
It's been 2.5 years, plus his history, haven't we seen enough that it's do or die this year?

Do or die? Are you saying he's on the hot seat going into the year?

Got Burrow as a senior, have an o-line that returns everyone, two top flight RB recruits, new passing coordinator from the best NFL offense, added to what Aranda can do on defense, vs a bunch of young SEC teams.
Hard to imagine us having a better shot at winning the SEC and making the playoffs for the foreseeable future than we'll have this season.

According to the Negas, he opened last season on the hot seat
Just admit it, you will go through every season waiting to pounce. That's a terrible way to be a fan.

He's not on the hot seat per se, but if it's another 3 loss season he should be gone. He has peaked.
Unless we're just interested in a consistent 9-10 wins with no hardware. If that's the goal, then O can probably do that endlessly.
Like I said, my biggest fear from the beginning of the hire was O winning 8-10 wins, forever. The "that's good enough" crowd would have its champion and we'd never compete for an NC while he was here.

The Canada debacle put him on the hot seat, so yes, that was fair. That was a million dollar mistake, and because defenders argue for it, backed up O's prospects yet another year to learn yet another offense.

So let's circle back around, he can actually get "cushion" and "time" as soon as he proves he can win hardware. Then it's ok to slack off, but until he's earned the benefit of the doubt, no he doesn't get it.
It's not about waiting to pounce, it's O's own goals and expectations. I lay out goals every year, if I went 3 years without hitting goals I wouldn't have a job. If you set a goal with a business and consistently whiffed it, what would happen to you?
Posted on 1/29/19 at 12:55 pm to RogerTheShrubber
Yeah, I see no reason why we shouldn't make the playoffs. Don't you agree?

Not on the hot seat, but should fired if he goes 9-3....got it lol.
So you're 100% convinced after 3 full seasons, he's peaked and there can be no better? This season is it. Really?
And there is no "thats good enough" crowd. Some people just have a tad bit more patience than others. IMO, Coach O has already done enough to guarantee another 2-3 years. If by then he still hasn't won anything, move on.

Can you see 3 losses on this schedule?
9-3 in 2019 would be a massive disappointment, wouldn't you agree?

Yeah I would agree. Cause for immediate termination? Not a chance.

I don't see how we don't take a significant dip after this next year with who we will lose. I think if O is going to truly challenge for a playoff spot in the near future it's going to be this year. IMHO of course. Another 3 loss season with what we have coming back and coming in next year should worry any objective observer.

I don't disagree that we should have high expectations going into next season. I'm just saying that the progress the program has made under O should give him a little longer of a leash. He shouldn't be on the hot seat anymore so there shouldn't be a 'make it or break it' argument for next season.

Not on the hot seat because he COULD get extra time if 9-3 is an SEC West Title/ SECC appearance. Maybe, MAYBE there's a chance for a stellar season that gets derailed for a REAL reason, etc.

You mean 3.5 seasons at LSU and 3 seasons at Ole Miss? Yes, I'd be sure O had peaked at that point.

So what does all the data say about literally every NC championship coach this century winning hardware in under 3 years, and all but Fisher and Dabo winning titles in 3 years. Fisher won at 4, Dabo in 7, but both won hardware in Year 1 or 2.
Again, needing "time" is false. You get "time" and the benefit of the doubt BECAUSE you win.
