Guess we will see. I’ve personally liked the 3-4.

It really revolves around the personnel and I think we have the personnel to go with a great 4 man rush and still get pressure along with some fancy blitz packages here and there.

i said since his HS tape that Stevens should be a LB. he's not far from a WLB in a 4-3 for sure

i don't why people are freaking out about the 4-3. even guys like Saban and Bill B are moving more towards 4-3 base

with all the 5 DB formations we play, we're going to have 4 down guys all the time. 2 interior and 2 edge.

Me either - you're only going to have a third LB on first down - maybe. that's if you're facing fewer than 3 WRs, frankly.

Idk why this is such hot news. O stated this on OTB days before the Pelini hire announcement.

He said he wanted a more traditional attacking defense. This was like last week.

yeah exactly, and i doubt on passing downs we would rely on much 1-gap penetration with our nose-types

just b/c we run a 4-3 doesn't mean we're going back to saban and his 290+ lb DEs

Danielle Hunter played at a great level at LSU and in the NFL out of the 4-3 at 6-5, 245 or so. same size as our edge guys nows

I like 3-4 too. Better against the spread

I agree I can't imagine going back to the 4-3, but hell if you can get a Burch type, you could make it work easily

you can't imagine it because you have no clue what a modern 4-3 looks like

This isn't 2003 or even 2007 with 4 285+ # guys on the DL

Who said it was.

But there are advantages allowed by a 3 man front that are obvious when looking at the spread.

I do not think we have been running a true 3-4,
nor do I think we will run a true 4-3

FWIW

3-4,
When we had Shelvin over center we were about as true to the 3-4 as you can get. What athlete you have around the edges and at OLB may allow for different schemes, but it is a 304

Because you have a bunch of posters on here that think they know football .
They actually don’t know shite about schemes .
The funny thing is that they actually believe they know more than Coach O about what defense LSU should run

I agree, that's the thing I've been trying to say, with the offenses now, you can't run a "true" 3-4 or 4-3.

Aranda's defense, majority of the time, had 3 d-linemen, 3 Lb's and 5 db's personnel wise ( not a true 3-4 personnel wise). When aligned, with Chaisson rolled up on the LOS you get a 4-2-5 alignment.

Question about the 4-3 vs 3-4 debate...

Is it absolutely necessary to be one or the other? Why can’t a team do both depending on personnel/opponent?

Aranda played bend but don't break against inferior teams too many times and it made the defense look soft. They nutted up in big games I will give them that but I'm ready for the smash mouth defense we used to play and couple that with this new offense ....look out!

nothing prevents using a DT in that same 2-gap role in a 4-3

i don't get why so many fans are so fixated on 2-gap play also. neither Bama nor Clemson rely on that and both love 4 down linemen

1-gap, penetrating DL means disrupting DL. that's what you want against all offenses (including the spread)

no. the Pats use both

in the pros, it's about limited roster spots and depth

in college, it's about limited coaching time/coaches
