He hired him as a recruiter. He was not DC. Kirby took that job from him in 2008 after Steele failed in 2007.

And yet he was paid more than Kirby?

Great! So the first thing we'll tell everybody about our new DC is that he has a great personality! That's gonna really help me feel better when our defense ranks in the 70's.

TBTHClearing up a couple of things on SteeleI admit that I was hoping for a big splash, and it's hard to be super excited about this - but it may not be as bad as everyone is making it seem. Just wanted to point out a couple of things: People keep quoting Clemson's defensive stats from 2012. Steele wasn't DC there in 2012. He left after their bowl game in January of 2012. LINK People (rightlfully) remember the drubbing that WVU put on Clemson that year - but WVU put up nearly as many yards on our defense that same year. LINK

You left out the total points LSU gave up
#2 LSU 13 14 7 13 47
#16 WVU 0 7 14 0 21

I do not mind giving up yards if we win if you notice we were able to score . We must of had a QB who could manage the game
same team different game WVU 70 points Clemson I think had 33 points ,
I do not think he likes to travel he is good on the PC , but bama's pass defense was not very good .

TBTHClearing up a couple of things on Steelequote:recruiting kids to play football for Saban is a little different then recruiting them to play for Les. I can be a good recruiter for a Saban coached team. C'mon, let's be fair. Nobody is doubting his abilities as a recruiter. He was the Rivals national recruiter of the year in 2005 at FSU as well. I get your point that Saban will still get plenty of recruits, but I don't think Steele will have much trouble selling LSU either.

LOL message board , every newspaper has told his story , LSU will be a hard sell

Mickey GoldmillClearing up a couple of things on SteeleDemoted? Lets see. 2008 Alabama Salaries: Offensive line coach Joe Pendry ($350,000), defensive head coach Steele ($350,000), defensive coordinator Smart ($275,000), running backs coach Burton Burns ($220,000), outside linebackers coach Lance Thompson ($210,000), defensive line coach Bo Davis ($190,000), and receivers coach Curt Cignetti ($170,000). LINK quote:Saban also announced Tuesday that Steele was promoted to associate head coach/head defensive coach and Smart was promoted to defensive coordinator. Alabama ranked 27th nationally last season in scoring defense (22.0 ppg) and 31st nationally in total defense (345.5 ypg). Three members of the Crimson Tide defense earned first team All-SEC honors (Wallace Gilberry, Rashad Johnson and Simeon Castille) while two other defenders were named to the All-SEC Freshmen team (Rolando McClain and Kareem Jackson). “Kevin’s an outstanding coach and an outstanding recruiter,” said Saban. “He has become a right hand man for me. He’s certainly a guy who would make a fantastic head coach. Of all the assistant coaches I’ve had, Kevin’s as fine as any of them. “Kirby had the opportunity to go someplace else as a defensive coordinator,” said Saban. “We felt it was imperative and very important to keep these two guys together. They had worked very well together in the past. They worked very well last year in helping our defense improve as the year went on. I’m very happy and pleased to have both of those guys on the staff. They both make a strong contribution, they both have tremendous leadership qualities, and they are both very, very good recruiters.” So again, he was not demoted. If anything, Smart was only promoted to keep him from leaving.

Saban made a sales pitch : LSU bought it hook line and sinker

LSU hires Alabama LB coach Kevin Steele to be its defensive coordinator

YAHOO · 10 hours ago

Previously, Steele was the defensive coordinator at Clemson from 2009-2012 and at Alabama in 2007 ... "This is a great hire for us," Miles said in a statement.…

yeah saban seems the type to keep a guy around because he is a solid dude.

When i said Saban see some value, I mean some football value. Which I assume is how he sees everyone.

Oh C'mon you still believe Saban promoted the man?

Was it that great defense in 07 or 08? Or maybe JUST MAYBE Steele is a good recruiter but Saban didn't want him to touch his defense any longer. The same thing Bama fans has said for years. Then he came back because of recruiting. Nobody is saying the guy cant recruit. History just shows that he cannot coach.

His defense was 100th in 2011......that's why he wasn't there in 2012.

You don't understand how to read between the lines and you don't understand politics, do you? I would love to work with someone like you in the business world. I could spin something so negative for you and make you think I was doing you a favor.

You don't go from DC to special asst or whatever fricking fancy title he got without it being a demotion. Giving up playcalling of the Defense is a demotion no matter how you slice it. It just means Saban thought higher of Smart as a defensive mind than Steele but didn't want to lose a recruiter.

If it's a promotion or lateral move for Steele, why did he bolt the first chance he got to be a DC again?

It's the equivalent of what a company would do when someone gets assigned to special projects. Polite way of saying we don't trust you with our assets but we are going to keep you around.

Did coach Stud take a pay cut when we hired Cam? He was making OC pay to coach the line.
