Thought it was a great interview, talked a bit about his time at LSU with his brother. Never knew he was an accountant

Great interview. One of the all time greats.

How would you like to be the Senior Accountant having to tell Belle he made an error in the ledger?

When I was at LSU even the football players wouldn’t mess with Albert Bell.
He was Joey then.

Would love to see Belle come back to LSU and he and Bertman can mend the fences.
He was a big reason crowds took off at LSU in the Bertman early years.
In Bertman's book, he indicates it was one of the biggest regrets he had in the way he handled his suspension and ultimate dismissal from program.

I had classes with Terry, completely opposite of Joey. RIP

Joey is the only Bertman - former player who has never returned for any reunion. Consider when Skip finally kicked him off the team: the Tigers had just qualified for Omaha & Joey was obviously one of the team's best players. For Skip to boot him then says a lot about Joey's transgressions. Not sure what else Skip could have done, Joey's crap had built up over his whole time there. And looking at all the shite he caused in the pros, it wasn't Skip's poor handling by any means. Always heard that Terry was the CPA, not Joey.

I love Skip B, but he absolutely didn't handle that situation correctly. Joey was obviously a handful, but when you don't stand up and stand with your player when someone is in the outfield calling him despicable names - N word this N word that, among other things, what do people expect?
Even his teammates didn't handle it the right way. If that's my friend and teammate, I'm not playing another pitch until that racist a-hole is removed from the ball park. That says a lot about Miss State and their people back then.

Joey was a great ball player, but was also an a-hole. His dismissal was warranted. He had a self-destruct personality which caught up with him, nothing else Skip could do. I wonder today if he ever calmed down, probably not and I certainly wouldn't want to find out!

Belle seems to have mellowed a little with age. I went to junior high with him and his brother and even at that age you could tell Joey was a dude that you didn’t want to frick with. His brother was the complete opposite.

Guy was a complete piece of human garbage throughout his youth and mlb career. Now he is old and he has mellowed like we all do with age. I had multiple run ins with him and his family throughout my lifetime. Dad-great, brother-great, mom-psycho, him-psycho.

i agree to an extent.
If Joey (Albert) was a regular arse dude, then Skip and his teammates likely would have had his back more than they did.
but when you’re an absolute a-hole and a ticking time bomb, then it wears on those you’re closest to.
And eventually they no longer have your six.
and that’s what happened to Belle.
nobody else heard the taunts.
so everyone (Skip, teammates, Miss State players, etc).
so the situation was viewed and treated as a hot head exploding.
it was boy who cried wolf story.
dude snapped so many times that the one time it was warranted, those that should have defended him didn’t.

Back then?
And it is ridgodamndiculous that Belle's not in the HoF. But you can't be mean to the baseball press corps. That's much more imp than hitting the living shite out of the ball consistently for a decade.

One time in the late 80’s in middle school I walked in one day and he was my substitute teacher. He sat there and pointed at the board and said everyone do that and be quiet. That was the most quiet room with a substitute teacher in the history of middle schools across the country

Exactly right. I even read that he was arrested as recently as 2018 here where I live in Scottsdale. I believe it was for disorderly conduct.
