Everyone is trying to make sense of this. Here's my take. I'm sensing that Chavis had worn out his welcome with CLM in some way. Yes, he was a great coach, but at his pay and with the great talent, his defenses often dropped the ball at the end of big games (I know, the offense sucked but that's another story).

aTM wanted a big name hire in the worst way to stem a pathetic D. So they threw the bank at Chavis and Chief is no dummy. He is a mercenary and just as he left TN for LSU, he is now heading to aTM. This is retirement bank for him. And he gets a several year performance mulligan to boot, one that had disappeared at LSU (remember the board after Auburn?)

He can probably swaw a few LSU targets his way, but he was never a big factor in recruiting. Like someone else said, even though he specialized in LB's, you didn't see 5star recruits banging on LSU's doors year in and year out to play for him.

What we are losing is a solid defensive coach - but definitely one that can be replaced. There are few coaches who can work their wizardry at multiple places. Chavis' success at LSU is in no way guaranteed at aTm. The pressure on him now is enormous. He will have to be more proactive in recruiting and succeed. I am sure they will get better. But like someone else said, is Sumlin going to let Chavis have a free hand in scholarships at the expense of his dear offense?

I think Chavis did good work here - his D kept us in games we could have lost, but the D also broke at the worst times as well (Bama, Bama, etc).

PROVIDING that CLM makes a solid hire, we will be OK, and possibly with a DC who is an active recruiter, be better off.

Even with a solid DC hire, there still are many other issues. Namely why LSU cannot get top recruits to commit early (we are way below the other top dogs in count this late in the game - again), and the QB issues, which is the biggest headscratcher of all.

I still think LSU is a top program, but just about everyone else in the SECw is trending up (even Arky of late), and relatively we seem to be wallowing. That's not good.

Tldr but I don't think quietly pushing him out the door would involve Les going to his hotel room late last night to beg him to stay.

You'll really see some wallowing if Les promotes BDP again.

He had an offer on his desk for 1.33M and 3 years.

All he had to do was sign it.

This makes no sense. Les looked genuinely shocked at the presser last night. At least more confused than usual. He did not see this coming.

What a push out the door that is.

Les was too busy picking his ear and chewing on grass.

I agree with your assessment of Chavis, a competent but replaceable coach. I think the time is ripe however to force Les to relinquish all control of the offense or leave.

Agreed. Does CLM ever actually "fire" a coach, or do they just mysteriously get job offers they take.

My speculation: CLM lets them know, before the bowl game, they may want to consider job openings. Then they do so, find a job and quietly (usually), move on.

Coaching community is a small, tight group. As a coach, you'd have to like working for a coach who doesn't just blame a season on you, throw you under the bus, and then fire you at the worst possible time to be trying to find a new job.

That said, it sucks he going to a SECW team.

Lost in all of this, is the fact that Chavis obviously had little confidence Les would be here for the duration of Chavis contract with LSU

Well if that's the case then we are really screwed. Because several days ago everyone knew aTm was offering 1.7 for 4 years or something like that.

Chief had an expiring contract. If Les got the job at UM, Chief was not going b/c he is an SEC guy. Chief needed to secure his future.

Who has been the longest tenured coach to ever coach for Miles? I don't have this answer, so I asked the rant.

What if he was just offered more money by a team that was desperate to shore up it's epically bad defense. He was offered quite a bit more than the offer that LSU made and they declined to match A&M. It seems like everyone is trying to make this a lot more complicated than it really is. I know no more than anyone else but I think we should start with the most obvious motive.

I agree with you on all counts. Problem is that CLM has had some great assistants (and some not-so-great) and has recruited well. So, as Wendy's said years ago, "Where's the beef". Don't get your hopes up.

Yeah, it was reported as such. But I'm not sure anyone in the Athletic Dept ever confirmed this offer. (I could be wrong).

we will get a great replacement, we have the money to offer and are stacked with talent. I when chavis came here all the tenn fans said '3rd and chavis' which is exactly what we expereinced yesterday and several other games.

The style of offense A&M runs will make it much harder for chavis to be successful. Will he make thier D better? yes. Will he make thier D a top 10 program? heck no.

Further evidence of how detached he (Miles) has become as the leader of our football program. His comments, to me, are reflective of a guy that is not in constant communication with his staff (or he would have known where things stood with Chavis).
