My bad. I misjudged the distance. 6 or 7 blocks north of Jesuit.

Sounds like a compound fracture and the bone protruded from the skin.
This is just sad news.

Just north of Canal Street. Actually, about 4 or 5 blocks or so north of Jesuit High School, if you know where that is.
Just South of Orleans Ave.; this roadway was recently redone to install the streetcar tracks nuetral ground side lane and is in very good condition. This is very sad; get well soon CJ!

Judging by the wreckage, it's amazing that he's still alive.

Open fracture like this is common in head-on MVAs (head-on being frontal impact). It is more common for left leg because the left leg is closest to the wheel well which is pushed back. They can be very gruesome injuries in which the tibia and fibula are essentially folded backwards or to the side.
It will be a while before he plays ball again. Another issue will be ligament damage to the knee, ankle and potentially hip.

I don't know. Sounds like he almost lost a leg to me, which is believable when you look at the picture of the car.
Damn...........
Fight it Chad; thoughts and prayers with the surgeons too.
