Sorry I don't have time for a summary, but here are the opening lines....

quote:

Let's get there faster when it comes to the expectations for Lane Kiffin at LSU.

This might be the diet version of Nick Saban taking over Alabama in 2007.

And yes, it's absolutely 100% fair to put those unrealistic expectations on this hire.

LSU is a national championship-or-bust program. You don't get to be the head coach in Baton Rouge unless you expect to win national titles - plural.

quote:

Now with Lane Kiffin, LSU comes into the 2026 college football season as a true favorite to win the SEC Championship and be a factor in the College Football Playoff.

You think that's all too hyperbolic? You think there needs to be some roll slowing here? Nah - if anything, Kiffin going to LSU is being undersold.

Except for the fact that no LSU Football Head Coach has ever been able to win Multiple National Championships. That is still a goal that hasn't been reached for any Coach. The hope is that Kiffin changes that but damn the expectations in year 1 should not be Championship or bust. Honestly, playoff contention is reasonable anything more than that is just asking for trouble and disappointment.

Only one more full month to endure without LSU football my man. It’ll be here before you know it.

Are they first to predict LSU to win the SEC? Seems I remember all the others putting LSU around 5th or so and actually Ole Piss ahead of the Tigers.

"a" favorite vs. "the" favorite. The question is how broad do you define "favorite"?

I suspect there will be tiers of how the SEC teams are picked to finish. Only order of the teams in those tiers will be strongly debated. For instance:

Texas and Georgia will be picked to finish 1 & 2. There will be debate over the order.

A&M, Alabama, LSU, Ole Miss, and Oklahoma will be in the second group (teams 3-7). The order will be different depending on who you talk to.

While this wouldn't be my order, if I had to bet, this will be how the teams are projected to finish at the end of media days

1. Texas
2. Georgia
3. A&M
4. Alabama
5. LSU
6. Ole Miss
7. Oklahoma

If we convert a 3rd and 1 vs Clemson running between the tackles I will shed a tear of joy.

If I told you Kiffin is at LSU for 8 years and dies the following:

Playoffs 6 times
Wins a game 4 times
Wins more than 1 game 2 times
Wins national title 1 time

Would you call that a success? I would.

That's true, but Saban certainly would have won multiple championships had he stayed, and Miles came damn close to winning a second 'ship. I think Fiutak's point is that winning one title at LSU isn't enough to guarantee your job. To stay employed at LSU, you need to continue to win or, at least, play for championships on a regular basis. That is something that neither Miles nor Orgeron was able to do, so they were fired.

I don't disagree with you but he did leave so claiming Saban would have is irrelevant. The point remains no Coach has done so. And it is far harder to win a Championship in this era of College Football than it was in 2003-2013. I still believe that Kiffin can regularly make it to the playoff which should keep his job secure as long as he eventually wins one. Only thing that would prevent that is if he were to leave us for another job.

I would 100% call that a success. The benchmark should be making it to the playoff. Once in the playoff anything can happen.

That's a really good read. Fiutak has always been high on LSU's expectations and potential. Wish he would bring back "Cavalcade of Whimsy".

Yep ..me too. He's a great writer and the Cavalcade was always a must read: insightful and witty at the same time.

Correction: CB depth is an issue but safety position is absolutely stacked! I would argue, it's the deepest position group on the team.

Ole Miss was average the year before he arrived there and in year one, they led the league in offensive yards and were 3rd in scoring.

His defense was putrid and last in the SEC.

He has better offensive talent than his first Ole Miss team and a far better defense.

Regular season floor: 10-2
Regular season ceiling: 12-0
