He made up for not going for it last year in that situation.

Dumbest meme on this board.

A NPC response.

I’m going to lean on Kelly and coaches knowing the strategy and team dynamic better than the fans on whether or not to defer.

Maybe they believe the defense will perform better first drive of second half rather than right out of the gate? This at least gives Baker 2 quarters to take it in and make adjustments. Which he has.

Either way, opting to defer or to take the ball should not tip the scale between a win or loss. We’re talking minute pros and cons either way. Just go out there, execute the gameplan and win.

His record following the bye week says otherwise.

Such a lazy comment. Who scored right before the half on Saturday?

Ole Miss ended both halves with the ball. They had more possessions than we did. Why do people think that taking the ball first somehow gives you an extra possession?

LSU kicked a FG with :05 left in the half. Who gives a shite if they ended the first half with the ball?

Literally made no difference in this game.

Overall, the coaching staff did a great job in this game. But let's not pretend dropped touchdowns and missed field goals equate to good early defense. The first quarter was miserable to watch, tempered only by a defensive play here and there and a big 4th down stop. If Ole Miss hadn't choked on its own shite in the first, we'd have been staring down the barrel of a USCe type lead that would have been very tough to come back from.

Credit to the team and the coaches for taking advantage of the OM screwups and for overcoming their own. It was a hell of a game, and a lot of credit for the win to be handed around. Wow, wasn't it fun watching a fricking defense again! Our second half D was on fire! Great schemes, great execution, good open field tackling, and even some great plays on balls in the secondary.

The team is improving each week, which is exactly what they should be doing. But, damn, these slow starts are frustrating. Maybe we should take the team over to the practice facility in full game dress and have them scrimmage for a quarter before home games.

It took Nuss a while to get on track. He was all over the place early. But man, when he got hot at the end, but was a thing of beauty coupled with great play by the defense. It was tough early, but LSU finished like a playoff contender.

I rather give up my first possession against a strong opponent because the first couple of possessions are both teams trying to figure things out. Those first two possessions are usually your opponents best shot

These two sentences contradict each other, no?

If Nuss plays like he did in any other game from the start, we would have won convincing! BK could have not trusted Nuss with the way he was playing, but he did! Excellent coaching!!

You can’t say I want to put the strength of my team on the field first and then go 3 & out though. That’s a bad look.

He’s a really good coach..but is it too much to ask to have a consistent run game with the talent we have on the oline?

He once again didn’t have the team prepared with ample time to do so. He’s terrible with extended preparation time. Baker deserves credit.

The defense is half the fricking team. They came out ready from the jump, making key red zone stops and a hold to a FG in the first quarter. It could have been 17-0 out of the gate if not for their play early. Yes, OM dropped a potential big play, but everything else the defense created themselves. You can’t say the DC gets all the credit for that and the head coach gets none.

On the flip side, the offense coming out slow was a problem and has been in a few games, notably vs USCe. BK and Sloan definitely deserve criticism for that. But Nuss pressing the ball downfield constantly when he didn’t have to and when the throws weren’t open- that rests mostly on him. He is the one choosing the route to throw, not the coaches.

Yes you can. The decision can be right & yet you have a suboptimal outcome.

Well that’s pure horseshite. If you prevent a TD and hold an offense to a FG attempt, that’s already a 4 point swing. If they miss the FG, your defense caused a 7 point swing and likely grabbed at least some of the game momentum. In today’s offense-heavy football, every FG attempt you hold a team outside of a game-winner or half closer to is still a win for the defense.

It's pretty simple. You put your strength on the field first
No.

You should always defer because it gives you the opportunity to have back-to-back offensive drives. One at the end of the 1st half and one to start the 2nd half.

And I'm fully aware you still get the drive if you start the game with the ball, but momentum doesn't swing like having two scoring drives back-to-back where the other team doesn't even touch the ball.

There was under 3 minutes left and LSU only had two timeouts as I recall
There would have been a 2-minute stoppage in there as well.
