This is nothing to get mad over, but this is where a smart coach tells his guys before a press conference to do nothing but talk in coach speak about the other team. It takes absolutely 0 effort and thought to just say, “they are a great team and we respect them and we’re looking forward to a great battle.” There’s just no reason to ever give anyone ammo for free. That’s just stupid and lazy.
For the coach, just have a few examples of our best players and things we know they do well. It’s just not hard to make all of this as boring and benign as possible.

I disagree. It’s the most basic question in the book. An opportunity to show some respect and break down what you know about the other team before diving into your own team. They fumbled it tremendously and now it’s bulletin board material.
ETA: the part that made it a dumb question was when the interviewer added “as student athletes and fans of the game,” which made could have made them feel insecure as if they were expected to praise their peers and put them on an unequal pedestal.

The question was disrespectful to Coastal. Don't get me wrong, they are arrogant and sarcastic (a reflection of their coach) but that question basically asked them to fangirl their opponent. They responded in kind. To be fair, Ant wasn't exactly "respectful" with the question about letting them get the lead in light of giving up 3 to UCLA....he responded with (don't let them score...)

If you're any team...getting a question asked like that...just say anything in general...they pitch well...hit well...a ..championship series, you expect to play a great opponent
