Didn't it get to the point where he was doing his weekly coaches show and they would go to the phones lines and no one would call in?

That's some "writing on the wall shite" there.

Skip tried to help him after his second to last year and Smoke completely blew him off. Refused to implement any of Skip's suggestions. Smoke also didn't adapt, recruited like it was 15 years earlier.

PM kicked off four starters when he took over.

f Skip made it have to be a legacy hand picked hire he should have gone with Jim Wells from Alabama.

The rumors (circa 2000) were that Wells was the first choice as the replacement and wanted the job. However, Skip didn't want to give up the money for his summer baseball camp so Wells didn't take the job. Smoke agreed to Skip's terms and got the job. It's been 20+ years so my memory is a little fuzzy on the details.

Pawl made a few CWS but was a major disappointment. LSU was too much for him.

So easily to switch these names out after 2009 yet smoke got 4 years and Pawl got 13.

Smoke was average. Made a few World Series and then got on the booze humor has it. People bash him but outside of 2009 he was exact same thing as Pawl. Underwhelming finishes and no ships. Yet smoke got 4 years Pawl got 13. Pawl lost to no name programs and faltered the program down from a national power to where we are now. A 2 seed in Hattiesburg.

I can attest that he was at the casino playing the slot machines a lot towards the end.

Raymond Peter "Smoke" Laval (born December 20, 1955) is an American college baseball coach who was the head coach of the University of North Florida Ospreys. He is a former head coach of the Louisiana State University Tigers and the University of Louisiana at Monroe Indians baseball teams.

This would be true if you ignored the landscape of college baseball during these times, and the status of the program in smoke’s last 2 years and the first year it was handed to PM…….and the program from 2012-2017

He was pretty good at NLU. Had too big of shoes to fill at LSU IMO.

This is an excuse. Bertman MADE his landscape. Pawl just followed and didn’t do a good job at following.

Alright common this is dumb. That's like saying when Saban retires that Alabama must find a person better than him.

No it’s not. I’m not saying Pawl had to better Skips plan I’m saying Pawl was a trend setter. He waited till we got beat or the park got built to change. He wasn’t a visionary nor did he recruit to what he tried to do. We were a small ball club that couldn’t play small ball. Pawls record speaks to my words being true. One title in 15 years. So try to defend him all you want but that is all the defense I need. Several schools won multiple titles in that time span just from the SEC. So you keep your little excuses. Pawl was mediocre then got lazy and had a AD (Alleva) who didn’t care about LSUs reputation so he kept coaches way past their time. Miles, Pawl, DD, Nikki, Torino, so he didn’t have to take the effort to replace them.

I felt like LSU should have honored smoke and Paul a bit more with the legends plaza area outside the new box. They have a giant statue of Bertman and nothing for the other guys. I mean I know skip is the man who made LSU baseball What it is ans I'm not saying Smoke and Paul should have a statue as big as Skip, but maybe like a 3 foot tall statue or something.
