3 - 4 defense with a drop linebacker.

It was awesome except we had no true noseguard, our Lbs were building for speed and not bulk nd none of our Lbs figured out the drop back part.

All I can recall about Tepper was everyone in our section screaming to fire him during the last season. Every play, every down, new curse words were hurled at the Tiger bench directed at Lou.

The alignment was a 3-4, but one of the LBs was supposed to be a "drop backer" thus making it more of a 3-3-5. Problem is most 3-3-5's use a 5th DB instead of just dropping a LB. This often times put a LB matched up on a slot WR. We never varied this despite the number of WRs on the field. Even with 4 WRs, we still had 4 LBs on the field.

Add to this that the scheme called for reacting to the offense instead of forcing the issue, it was a very bad defense. I knew we were in trouble when we gave up over 400 yds of offense to Idaho in the third week of the 98 season.

Those were bad times. Our defense literally stood around and read while the offense ran up the field. It was horrible. Like someone said it was like Crowton level incompetent. We had no chance at all with Tepper.

Not even close. That is even an insult to Crowton.

This.

If Tepper's defense was remotely as good as Crowton's offense, Dinardo would not have been fired, LSU would have never hired Saban, and it may be year 53 without a champeenship.

It was a read and react nickel defense.

Offense lines up 5 wide? nickel.

Stacked line right, full house backfield? nickel.

Straight up "I" formation? nickel.

Wishbone? nickel.

Shotgun? nickel.

Good explanation. The Bend but don't Break Tepper D sucked donkey nuts. Basically he didn't want to give up the 90 yard big play, but gave up a shitload of 20 yarders all day long.

His defense was very complicated. You would never understand it.

...you or anybody else, apparently!

Take Adriana Lima and drop her on an 18th century pirate ship in the middle of the Atlantic. Adriana is the LSU defense. The result is lots and lots of raping. My butthole physically hurt after watching that crap defense.

I remember that stupid bastard said it takes 4-5 years to learn his defense. Nevermind most college players only start for about 2 years, if they're lucky.

We basically played prevent defense the whole damn game, but we also allowed a lot of big plays. Tepper was horrendous.

It was a read and react, as others have written here. He had written a book on playing linebacker at the college level. After he convinced DiNardo his defense would work, he announced that it was going to take a full four years to completely install his defensive scheme. I remember one time Thomas Dunston man to man on Champ Bailey in Tepper's defense. DiNardo's loyalty to Tepper cost DiNardo his job.

In a way Tepper was good for LSU because it got DiNardo out of here much more quickly.

1. Recruit a TM7.
2. Let him run wild
3. Repeat.

If you don't have a TM7, you're SOL. We didn't and we were SOL.

I have heard of the horrors of his defense but I was too young to remember how it worked.

People who have thoroughly reviewed his stated approach to defense say that it is absolutely genius. The problem is that his players had a tough time learning to implement it. This begs the question of how long should one be allowed to continue it before it just has to be scrapped? Perhaps LSU's defense could have been fully functional with it under an additional year of practice, but there really didn't seem to be much of an improvement over the span of time that LSU used it.

I was being facetious in my other post, but the gist of it was true. You need a physical run stopper who can also cover a receiver one on one. There are only a handful of guys like that nationwide at any one time. If you don't have one, Tepper's defense isn't going to work.

(1)Leave the middle of the field wide arse open.

(2) Teach the corners to never look for the ball. Instead, attempt to face guard your opponent and watch as he catches it for a TD.

(3) Have your defensive unit run around like chickens with their heads cut off in confusion before the snap.

----other than that------

(4) "I wrote a book about LB's"

(5) "It will take 4-5 years for the players to learn my system"
