He's shown some potential in the little time on the field that we've seen. My concern is the 3rd and long conversions. I haven't seen enough completions out of him yet to think that he can help us beat the top 4 teams we will play this year. What do you guys think? I am also concerned about his overall throwing accuracy. JL had 4 quarters where he looked like Joe Montana against Auburn and Troy but then looked like Marcus Randle and Jamie Howard at their worst .
Do you think JJ will lead us to a 10-2 season and why?

he'll have a lot of talent around him, but I'm not going to bet the farm on a QB with two starts on his resume.

No. He will show flashes of brilliance and flashes of stupidity. First of all, he is very inexperienced. He is young and young QBs make mistakes. Second, he has the weight of the world on his shoulders. He realizes that QB play sunk last year's season and he knows that the entire LSU fanbase expects him to fix that. I cannot even imagine the pressure.

Third, if the practice reports are true, he is at best the second most accurate passer on the team, perhaps third. I am hoping that he is a gamer and will overcome that when the lights come on.

For LSU to go 10-2 a few things are going to have to happen. The defense is going to have to be much better...that is a given. The offensive line is going to have to control things and coupled with our running game give us 3rd and short more times than not. JJ, or whoever is the QB, is going to have to convert 3rd downs.

If LSU has to rely on JJ to win games, LSU is in trouble IMO.

Well put Doc,
I agree and I know that the first time JJ messes up he is going to be blistered here on the rant. I hope he will quickly learn his limitations and not turn the ball over. I believe we would have one 2 more games last season had we not turned the ball over as much as we did (bama and arky)

I agree, we are almost in the same boat as last year with Hatch and Lee, I am sure JJ will do better, but just because someone looks good in practice doesn't mean anything.

Or look bad in practice ala Rohan Davey. They said he practiced poorly and he produced well on the field. So I hope though JJ may not be as accurate in practice this week he can put it together against our SEC foes!

Come from around 30 pts down against troy in the 4th quarter to save an embarrassing loss to win the game. And the second half against Auburn he did quite well after his pick 6. Come on man certainly you watched these games!!!

I think so........Tigers win the National Championship, Saints win the Superbowl, we therefore close the state up for a week of partyin'..........

Seriously, I think he will be fine. He IS young, though, so hopefully if he falters a bit we don't destroy him with boo's and "I knew he wouldn't do well" crap.

If he would have played well in the 1st place they wouldn't have been down by 30!!!! AND Au was garbage last year. LSU was lucky to even win that game.

Hence the reason I only included 2 quarters from that game and 2 from Auburn. The point here is that he only played well 1/2 of two games. Whether AU was garbage or not doesn't concern me as much as if our quarterback can check off recievers, read defences etc..in this particular thread.
The topic of this discussion is JJ and not JL. So to get back on topic...will JJ be more consistant his second year in the system than JL was in his 2nd year.

Much like the 07 team. I was watching the game on Hulu last night and I honestly didn't remember how many third and short situations the offense was in and how well they performed in them (11/18 on 3rd down.) Hopefully Chuck the Truck can convert these on a consistent basis as did Hester, I have full confidence that he will. (We converted 47% of time on 3rd down in 07'104/223 as opposed to 38% 70/183 in 08')

Well it is obvious that JJ can run a crowton style offense better than JL can.

---------------------------------

I've looked back at JJs completions, and see something very different than our recent qbs. JJ see's the field! The football is well distributed, and saying this, and JJs ability to run gives me plenty comfort with the ball in JJs hands on any down, at any distance.

Every quote I responded to is in this thread. My basic point was that while the qb last year was horrific, there were other factors that led to the 08' teams 8-5 record. But to answer your question, JJ will be a big factor in this teams return to a double digit win season in 09'. He seems to have all the intangibles that qbs need to succeed on the college level. The team has full confidence in him as a leader and this will translate to better overall play from the offense on game day.
