How's he been defending though? Offense was never his problem as he's very skilled and can get his shot off on almost anyone. Having him buy in and play lock down defense was his weakness.

NBA teams don't care that much about D these days. He isn't much of a defensive player, but few players play tough D in the NBA. With him having the most 20+ point games of any NBA rookies in 2022, they are not going to really care.

Well, considering his coach let him play extended minutes to get those big scoring nights it seems his defense was good enough for them.

True enough, there’s not too many charity minutes being played in the NBA.

That's not really true. For a team that is expected to compete for a title, defense could be the difference down the stretch.

And the Nets had an 11 game losing streak until just snapped with their most recent win, and I would have to imagine, without Durant that some defense has contributed to that.

Your not gonna stop the best NBA teams, that is a reality, they are too good, but the teams that stop them better relative to the rest will be most successful and to say NBA teams don't really care about defense is convenient and understandable but not really accurate.

But pulling for Cam - looked at the stats and his numbers seemed more efficient than we would often see here - i.e. points coming off less field goal attempts. He still gets and makes lots of free throws.

I think he means it’s not a prerequisite anymore. Most of the good defensive players are on a couple of teams who value defense like the Bucks last season but overall you might find 1 or 2 good defensive players per team if that.

They just have to show some capacity to play defense - for the last two minutes of regular season games, plus playoff potential.

I think the some capacity thing is largely correct. I believe it’s because there is really no stopping a lot of players in the league. Take Durant, basically you just have to hope he misses.

Simmons going to the Nets is great for Thomas. They are one of the few teams with enough quality shooter that wants a pass first point guard like Simmons, with very little scoring expectations on him. With Harden being gone, Thomas moves up one in the rotations. With so much attention on Durant, Thomas will have many good looks. As we saw here, he is deadly when he is able to spot up. The problem he had last year was forcing up too many shots when double and triple teams, which he will never see with the Nets.

I mean that’s kinda how it works. You have to defend

Nets had lost 11 straight up until last night

One of the biggest fallacies about the NBA is that they don't play defense.

The reality is, it's nearly IMPOSSIBLE to play defense in that league. There are 15 on a roster. Not sure, but 25 teams? That means the 375 best players (more or less) in the world are in the league. Elite offensive players, and the rules are stacked against defense to begin with.

No one is stopping them from drafting only elite defensive players.

It is true that the rules make it hard to play great D along with how the games are called. Isaiah Thomas said last year that nobody plays defense in the NBA now. I think he exagerrated some, but as a former player and a person who has been involved with the NBA for decades now, he would know. With the rules and fouls that are called, it's not their focus. Plus, good offensive play is more exciting to most fans and sells tickets. The focus is on just having better offensive players than the other team.
