It never works for us because we rarely pass the ball over 10 yards. Secondary just has to play close and it usually gets stuffed for a loss. When we give the defense no reason to play back, this play will not work.

It works with the right personnel, and the other WR making a good block.

I actually like the play, but there are a few problems with it in our offense. You have to have good WR blocking. This play will ALWAYS have defenders rushing to the ball, so the question is whether you can block the first 2 or so. Then you need a WR who can make people miss, which I think we have. The pass is not a hard one but it HAS to be accurate. Time spent reaching for the ball is too precious. Receiver must be able to catch the ball almost as a runner takes a handoff. Finally, it really works when the other team is afraid of being beaten down the field; we have put much fear of that our opponents' hearts. In sum, it's a good play as part of a balanced offensive attack, which we're working to achieve.

Its primary purpose is to prevent the defense from cheating into the box.

It is (or should be) a sight check at the line based on DB alignment. If the defense crams the middle of the field and leaves one DB on two receivers (or two on three if trips formation), there is an automatic check to a bubble screen.

Against teams with a downfield passing attack you'll see cornerbacks lining up 10-15 yards off the receiver. Against us they are 3-5 yards off the ball.

I cringe everytime I see lsu or anyone else use this play. 90% of the time it's a loss, 1 yard gain, or holding. I just don't get it, always seems to be a waste of a play to me. I'm sure it works here and there but fails way more often than not.

This play is gold in NCAA '14! My receiver is the leading receiver in the nation off of this play alone

Bubble screen works just fine if the receivers stay with their blocks.

Again, 1 out of 1,000 does not make it a good play.

not even close. worst play In all of football is the short yardage 3 tight end set where everyone is bunched in on the line of scrimmage. there are 20 bodies around the center and there is no where for the running back or qb to go. crappiest play ever.

The bubble screen can be great. We used it with a lot of success back when Rohan Davey and Josh Reed were running it. It's about executing it (throw, catch and blocking), running it against the right defensive set and not telegraphing when it's coming. Of course, that's pretty much any play.

It's all about the blocking

Really it starts out with the throw. Blocking is obviously important but for it to really be successful it must be a precise QUICK throw. If it's off a little or take a second longer than it should it almost always gets blown up.

Harris had to hit the pass right and the WRs have to block right, and the receiver has to be good. Harris has overthrown that pass mostly, the blocking had been shite on it, and the receiver doesn't get a chance to do anything. Maybe it will be better down the road when we have used it on a regular basis, but not right now.

as said often spread teams do it more because of the numbers advantage. LSU probably runs it from a 2 TE 2 WR set where there are 3 secondary guys just waiting to blow it up

Agreed...Harris threw high to Dupree, in the State game, which screwed it up from the beginning.

I appreciate your input, but on this one you are wrong.

We don't execute a short passing game with any effectiveness. This is not a knee jerk reaction, this is reality.

We also have a real hard time with screens, I have seen more LSU QBs just throw it in the dirt than I have successfully executed screens.

We would actually love to see something besides a 40 yard skinny post to Dural or Dupre on third and medium or long.

I would wager that we have a higher percentage of our passes go over 15 yards than any other team in football.

Granted when you only throw it 8 times a game, it only takes 3 attempts to skew it.
