bubble screen out to wr worst play in cfb?

I cringe everytime I see lsu or anyone else use this play. 90% of the time it's a loss, 1 yard gain, or holding. I just don't get it, always seems to be a waste of a play to me. I'm sure it works here and there but fails way more often than not.

ETA: It works if you have the right guy doing it. I would think guice/jackson are pretty qualified.

Plenty of teams have success with it. It's all about the blocking. But I'm with you, I never feel good about it's chances when we call it.

Other teams have occasional success with it b/c they don't run it 4 times a game. It always seems to be blown up when we run it. Same with the jet sweep

Do the names Amari Copper and Julio Jones mean anything to you? It gives athletes a chance in space. I actually love it.

You mean the jet sweep that Travin Dural had 4 carries for 49 yards against A&M with, 4 carries for 61 yards against Notre Dame with and a run for a touchdown which was called back Miss St with. Yeah that play never works for us
I swear most of our fans don't watch the games and just post nonsense they heard someone else who didn't watch the game say. Either that or they have zero understanding of football.

Old Jimbo ran these w/ success back in the day. Or at least it felt like they worked
But I agree. Seems we're always getting hit in the backfield. If the corner reads it early and you don't get the initial block, it fails. And it really all depends on making that defender miss right after catching the ball

It worked a little better for them because those two guys were always in the game on almost every offensive play.
When you trot Guice out there once in a blue moon, the D takes notice.

I agree. I've hated this play for years. It only seems to work out very, very rarely. It's usually just a wasted down. Other teams seem to be able to execute it more effectively for whatever reason.
With the type of WR's that we have, we don't need to be fricking around with that horizontal bullshite, anyway.

Are you talking about a bubble screen or other wr screen type play? I wouldn't really call a pass to a wide receiver a swing pass.
Josh Reed was the best bubble screen receiver in the history of college football and yeah Amari Cooper was excellent with it as someone else said.
When teams stack the box it should work. Our WR blocking on this type of play has been poor as of late though and needs to improve, and it will work well.

When you have agile, fleet-footed athletes hauling in those passes they can make excellent plays in space. The problem is that Dural and Dupre don't appear to possess the preferred skillset necessary to make such a play work.
Dural's straight-line speed is off the charts, but I don't anticipate him to post the greatest shuttle times when he enters the draft. Meanwhile, Malachi's talents pertain more to his size, vertical leap, and ability to high point a pass, rather than his shiftiness in the open field.
Shifty receivers, such as the slot man, are typically ideal for these play calls. I would be willing to bet that Tyron Johnson would excel at it. Of course, it's like another poster pointed out, it all hinges on your personnel's ability to block on the perimeter to spring the play free.

I agree that LSU generally doesn't have much success with that play. You need blocking to make it work, but also a guy who can shake defenders in a small amount of space. (You also have to have your QB make a quick and accurate throw). Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think they usually throw that route to Dural? That play should be going to Diarse. He's the best WR in space. On the (very) few times they actually throw him ball, he's generally able to make the first 1-2 guys miss. Basically, he's an underrated weapon that LSU fails to utilize (surprise, surprise)

Or are you taking about the bubble screens and wr quick screens that we use at times?
Either way, regardless of what you're talking about, it all comes down to blocking. Those plays are designed to get the ball to a playmaker in space and give them the opportunity to have a 1 on 1 situation which they must win in the open field in order for it to be effective. Works best when one of the receivers, either slot or wideout has soft coverage. On a swing pass, you're hoping to create a 1 on 1 matchup with your running back/motioning wide receiver vs a linebacker or safety, forcing them to chase him inside out and hoping your guy has the speed to turn the corner.

Maybe our low success rate has to do with our little vertical threat so corners play tight on us and leave hardly any space. We rarely test the dbs and keep them honest which drives me crazy but that's a whole different point.

We have had relative success with the jet sweep
Dural ran one for a TD that got called back for a BS holding call against MSU
We ran it a ton against A&M last year with great success
And Jackson ran one for decent gain.
