Bruce Feldman on Linehan hire

On his most recent Audible podcast with Stew Mandel, Bruce said this about the Linehan hire (cliffs):
They wrapped it up saying Coach O has earned the benefit of the doubt on coaching hires at this point, and there will be plenty of talent to work with, so let's wait and see.
I was initially skeptical about Linehan but it's good to hear Feldman say that he essentially blew them away in the interview. That likely came directly from O himself.
(For those unaware, Feldman and O are very tight. Feldman was the one who first reported the Brady hire.)
quote:
O is thinking 'we have this offense that Joe Brady helped develop, and Steve Ensminger was the primary playcaller and the one who oversaw it, and Steve is still there, the OL coach is still there ... some other assistants have moved on but the core group of the staff is still there. Let's add some other ideas to this. We're not gonna change anything, we know what our identity needs to be ...
But when they got Scott Linehan on the board and heard his ideas on specific things, they were really impressed. And they talked to some other guys in the process, who I think might have been sexier names, but sometimes the less track record you have the more attractive the name is ...
Tyler Tettleton accepted a job as an analyst. If I told you that Tyler Tettleton was gonna be the PGC, a guy who spent three years working under Lincoln Riley and a couple years in the NFL, that might be as enticing to some people as Joe Brady's resume was.

Can Tyler bring in his uncle as a baseball analyst. His batting stance is iconic.

Feldman and O are supppper tight like you mentioned. Same article would’ve been written if we hired Gary Crowton

Canada and E blew O away in their interviews as well. We know how that worked out.
Tettleton and the Samford OC coming in as analysts were the better hires.

Gonna call O a liar again?

I believe Mickey is Tyler’s dad

Ah. I misremembered from his playing days at Ohio.

Very, very good hires as analysts. And in fact, I think the hires of these guys make me feel way better about Linehan. We'll still have that young, energetic, creative, spread background guys in the film room and offensive design sessions.

you're selling Feldman short

It’s really hard to tell who does exactly what with the abundance of analysts we have. I’d be really interested to see the process of developing an offensive game plan with all of our resources.
This is what I was getting at. I think too many people see Linehan and are like “oh man nfl retread.” I’d bet just about anything that given the recent success we’ve had O isn’t looking to blow it up with a more traditional, less explosive offense. He probably wants some kind of hierarchy to implement what these young guys want to bring/plays the analytics staff are out there searching for.

Maybe Linehan is here to groom the young analysts while he is also the PGC.

Weird comp. Canada was brought in because he was the hottest name, and that was a mistake that O vowed never to repeat.
When did Ensminger have to interview? And to answer your question, I'd say that worked out pretty damn well. Best offense in history.

I don’t know if it’s just defense, but the early morning collaborative film sessions they have have been well documented as very instrumental to the team’s success.

Top Billing had a pretty good video about it as well...

I'm not sure if this was already posted on the Rant or not but does reflect positively on the hire.

Why is his bat that low? Lol

I seem to remember celebrating a national championship and enjoying arguably the best team in CFB history 31 days ago.
What were you doing?

That's where I'm at too. I'm not going to question another decision O makes, after bringing in Burrow and Brady, unless the wheels start falling off, and I don't expect that to happen.

quote:Canada is a good coach. O wanted a different offense. Considering our qb that year, Canada did remarkably well against bama.
